May have lost 4wd, help

I think my 4wd has gone out on me. The indicator light is on but it doesn't feel like its working. I drove it around the culdesac to see if the tires chirped and it didn't.
I have an 87 with auto hubs. Anyone have similar problems. Is it possible to lose 4wd high and still have 4wd low. Hope its not the t-case. Someone help.

Probably the auto hubs are not locking, a somewhat common issue. You could try cleaning them or swap them for a set of manual hubs. In 4H, is your front driveshaft turning when you drive? If so the, t-case is working.

I would put the truck on a lift or 4 jack stands and see if the front tires move when 4wd is engaged. If not, then take it to a reputable mechanic and have it checked out. Could be the vacuum hoses or something easy.

It will only move if the truck is moving. One idea is to stop the truck, engine off, tranny in gear and shft to 4H, then try to turn the front driveshaft by hand. It should not move.

or do the it redneck way. Go to a dirtlot, put in 4wd and see if you can get the front tires to spin
