I have had this car for about 2 months now, it is a 1999 Toyota 4runner with the v6 engine. I am having two problems,

1. When i am coasting in either 4th or 5th gear, the stick can come right out of gear with the clutch completely out. It has been doing this in 5th for a while, but it just now started doing it in 4th. Maybe this is a sign that my clutch needs replaced? I have 76k miles, and I think it is the original clutch.

2. This one is hard to explain. When I accelerate above 4,000 RPMs, and push the clutch in, I can kindof feel the engine in the clutch and it makes a loud noise coming from the clutch.

Hey... problem one is common problem with older Toys too... I believe its a shifter fork problem, but none the less, the tranny has to come out and be torn apart....

#2 I cant tell you about without hearing it, but with the trans out you will most likley replace the clutch and all related components too....

If it's the shift seat bushing, which it probably is, the tranny does not have to come out. Bob has a write-up in the tech section on this.

thats where i would start,fairly cheap,tranny does not have to come out,very common

96 Runner- I think that is what I will try first, then I will take it into Toyota since I have an extended warranty (came with it when I bought the truck used)

If you have an extended warranty and no deductible, take it in to Toyota first. Don't even bother messing with it yourself. Chances are they will accuse you of putting something back together wrong anyway.

1) as for being able to pull it out of gear at 4th and 5th at low rpm... man, all standards do that, there isnt much torque holding the gear in and they come out easy... i can do the same thing in my Civic

2) loud noise from the clutch after a high rpm shift? maybe you need a new clutch...

Didnt think about that 96 Runner, I guess I will just do that.

Yeah it is still the stock clutch, I am thinking I will need a new one soon.

As far as the clutch goes, it all depends on the type of driving you do. The girl I bought my rig off must have burned the clutch everywhere because it needed a clutch at 66K miles (slipping). However, I also spoke to a woman who drove mainly freeway with over 200K miles on her original clutch.

Quick note on the shifter seat bushing replacement threads... I just did my 86 and it was super easy, but instead of the plate that clocks in to hold the spring in place, my tranny had a plate with 4 screws holding it down.

Other than that, super easy and made a world of difference. My old bushing existed only as a dark green paste. Nothing left of it at all...

I am thinking that is partly the problem, and I am sure that i could do it, I just dont want to void the warranty.

#2 is most likey the throwout bearing. It didn't get properly lubed from the factory.
