I got underneath my 4Runner and on the right wheel, where it connects to the axle, the rubber boot had come off and black fluid was all over the wheel. The boot had come completly off. What should I do

Worse. The whole boot is off and flopping around. I'll be fine driving around in 2wd until the mechanic can fit me in.

If your whole boot is off, but not ripped at all...Then for a cheap fix, you could probably slide it back on to the joint and add fill it up with grease and add some new clamps. That should hold you off for a while. If you had manual hubs on there, I think it would be a pretty permanent fix since that axle will only spin when you lock the hubs. If you have the ADD, then no matter if you're in 4 or 2WD, that axle is always going to spin.

It's not difficult to convert to manual hubs if you currently have the ADD setup. They will help save wear on the cv joints and the boots. Also, some say they notice a slight increase in HP and MPG when the hubs are unlocked.

Well it depends on which year 4runner he has as to whether he can easily switch to manual hubs. If he has a 3rd gen, then it'll be too expensive.

my boots ripped soon after i got my 92...i talked to a bunch of mechanics..including my wife's uncle...he said that if all the grease is gone that is bad....but if some is left you can get new boots for pretty cheap....he said that you know you need to cv axles if you turn the wheel hard and hear scraping noises...that is because without the boots dirt and crap is attached to the axle...if you do decided to get it repaired by a mechanic check around....one place said 475 for new boots and 1200 for new axles....another did it for 450 for new axles........

I would not call this a major problem but one thst needs attention. The cv boot on my 92 split and lost most of the grease. So i went to the local auto part store and ordered a new axel with boots. Price was under $100 and went home and did the work myself.The job is dirty but fairly easy.

lol - they need boots with grease in there? OOPS!

I learned that the HARD way.... My truck went a LONG time with really torn up boots, and no grease becuase I did not know any better. (Probably 4 or 5 months and yes I have the ADD.)

Then one day on I-75 doing about 80mph, my right front tire completely locked up for about 10yards or so causing my yota to jerk across 3 lanes....thank God I was the only one on the road at the time. But this happened about 8 times trying to get down to 'sota from gainesville (3.5hr trip at 70mph)

Needless to say the axles and everything dad swapped for me when I was with mom.....he should have told me he was going to do it, becuase I WANTED to see how everything worked on the front axle....

In any event try and seal the boot, then have someone look at everything in there and see if it needs replacing or not...
