"Magic Coils" on 99?

I recently bought a 99 LTD 4X4 and need to find out if i have the larger coils that some of 99 models had. Is there a marking or a way to measure them to determine if they are the "Magic Coils" as Steve at SS calls them. Thanks

they are color coded. I have notes but not sure how to interpret them exactly-Steve knows the color codes. He is a great resource for all questions lift related. I believe the color codes are in the FAQ section of his website, but I can not find it now to save my life.

My notes say the fronts would be pink/blue for tall 99 coils.

My notes say the rears would be yellow/blue for tall 99 coils.

However I just had my 199 Sr5 upgraded to Old Man Emu at all 4 corners. I got all my old pieces in the garage and up for sale (see classifieds) I can take pics if you want, but I find photo hosting a pain in the butt.

My removed springs were pink/blue for one front and yellow/blue for the other front.(?) My rears were both yellow/red. As I said this is not making sense with my notes....

I feel pretty sure I did not have the tall springs as I was rubbing on 265/75/16 tires and that was not supposed to be happening to a 99 with talls.

How is that for totally confusing you?

Congrats on your FJ Cruiser and that is what I am leaning towards after this Runner.

Thanks Rod. I am going to go check the colors on my springs to see if they match yours. It doesn't sound right that you would have any rubbing issues if you had the larger 99 coils, so if i had to guess you probably don't. Love my FJ, but the wider wheel base gets me into trouble on a few occasions (Taylor and Poughkeepsie Pass' in CO to name a few ) not to mention the tears i have shed when my paint (Burgundy) has been scratched.

Any others on the colors on the larger Coils?

Taylor Pass descent down into Crested Butte is probably my most favorite 4WD adventure out here. Love that descent into a legal streambed follow along.

I knew I liked you!

call me Ron or call me Rod hey I am with Madonna now!

With my taller coils and 265 Nittos@35psi my truck was sitting at 36" from the ground to the lip of the flare and the nack was about a half inch taller.

I'll have to crawl under and check my coils for any colors but I don't particularly remember any on them when I got them new.

Here's my truck at the dragstrip a little while after I installed my coils and new shocks.

Ron- I will be hitting the Ouray area trails first, then move on over to Taylor Canyon to hit Taylor, Italian, and Pearl Passes. I will be out there from 16th through 21st...can't wait to get out of the heat here in OK.

X-AWDriver- i am going to measure the distance on mine, but since i don't have the same setup and miles i don't have a lot of hope of matching your specs. If you do see some colors on the coils, let me know. I am going to put some Trekmasters on later this week. Thanks.

The front colors are different between left and right because the springs are actually different part numbers between left and right. I believe both rear springs have the same part number, so they should be the same color.

And as a side note, Ron, I have a 2002 4Runner (which out of the factory sits way lower than any '99 4Runner... with tall or short springs). My springs are old and tired, and I hit the bumpstops on any medium size bump or larger, but my 265/75/16's do not rub at all... even under heavy articulation and with the steering at full lock.

What tires are you running since I'm surprised you don't get any rubbing considering you have a real bumper AND a winch.

kpudden - I will look out for you and take some time off around same period.

Mine is the stinkbug look white 99.

gsgallant thanks for info on the spring colors-yes I am curious also which 265/75/16s you are running?. Nittos I think are 32.6" so that may be a bit of the problem.....

X-Awd are you Ron Maiden on another forum? I apologize if I am combining people.....

I am myself on here and t4r.org

and frydricet4r over on UltimateYota.

I'm running BFG Land Terrains. They are made specifically for and are only sold at Canadian Tire, I think. When they were new, I had a stock bumper, no winch, and no sliders. I put the sliders, bumper, and winch on when the tire threads were approx 1/2 worn, so that makes a 1/4" of difference on the tire radius, I guess. I've got some brand new Firestone Destination MT's in my shed waiting to go on the truck, but the Sonoran Steel system 1.2 lift is going on first... as soon as I get off of night shifts at work.

Is this the difference between the coils.

http://www.sonoransteel.com/front_coil-springs.html

While looking through the records on our 97 the rear coils were replaced a couple years ago for some issue and were changed with some new version.
