Loud auto. transmission rattle, and recent MAJOR leak. Ideas???

02 4runner Auto: I've searched on here, toyotanation, and on T4R, and I cant seem to find any good info or sources; I dont want to search any more. Here's my deal. So my engine has been making this rattling, kinda grinding noise for a little over a week. I am pretty mechanically inclined, but could not figure it out. It almost sounded like rattling headers, or in that general location, but was not. Then I began to notice it gets worse when in gear but not moving, and at low rpm's taking off, until it finally disappears at normal speeds, so I figured something was going on with the tranny. The sound/vibration was annoying, but didnt seem like a huge perceivable problem... at the time. Then I began to notice some drops of leaking transmission fluid, then puddles of fluid, and tonight it erupted into a gushing leak. It is coming from the front of the bell housing, but I cant seem to find the exact location it is coming from, but everything from the housing down is soaked in ATF fluid. The sound/rattling got to be unbearable right before I pulled into the driveway, and when I got out and looked under the Runner, it looked like someone had been shot and bled all over the place. That is how much fluid leaked out in about 15 seconds of being parked. I will check in the morning and make sure there isnt any ATF fluid mixed into the coolant overflow. Should be easy to tell, the knucklehead that recently flushed my radiator used green coolant. Should I be getting that replaced to the red fluid soon too, or is generic coolant alright? Any ideas what could be causing this major leak? Is there a seal between the torque convertor to the tranny? Any help would be highly appreciated.

you have blowed up the tranny or torque converter. you now need to have it dropped and
rebuilt or replaced.

OR

you simply have a busted hose, and a replacement, and topping off the ATF, will fix it all

Sounds like your torque converter failed. Time for a new trans!

Someone mentioned that the bearing in the torque convertor may have failed, and that is what blew the seal. It also probably sent shards of metal flying... if the housing is fine can it be rebuilt, or is replacing it the better option?

IMHO... If metal shavings have gone all thru the tranny, ur best bet would be to replace it, and either do a good flush of the cooler, or replace the radiator.

Bewfore any of that tho, id start double checking the lines to make sure one isnt just rotted out, and needs to be replaced with rubber hose.
