89 was the last year the runners had the removable top they were the 1gens. 90 is when the new body style came 2gens, and In 88 the 3.0 v6 was available. you can also check the runners history page to find out more stuff.

first gen 4runners

The only bad point I can see, but its also a good point depending on the way you look at it, is the fact that they only come in 2 door models. It's somewhat difficult getting in and out of the rear if you have to frequently. I actually would rather have a 2 door though. I was originally interested in toyota's when my brother had an 86 sr5 extra cab, I knew I had to have one. I looked for a long time at just trucks and found nothing I liked. Then I looked at one 4runner and bought it right away. It was love at first sight . I love being able to carry 5 people and still being able to take the top and roll bar off and put my dirt bike in the back. It's basically a wash, if you absolutly need the pickup bed for hauling then get a xtra cab pickup, if not, go with a 4runner, you won't regret it.

Thumbs up

I love mine!!! I have a n 87' Runner w/ a 22RE 4 cyl. I have seen and driven the 6 cyl. and for the extra power they are worth it. I also liked the idea of a removable top, and the old school toyota look! I can't think of any bad points really, except maybe the rear sag(wich is easily fixed)... I was used to the 22RE when I got mine so I knew how to get the most out of it... It moves he,he,he. Good points being room for four passengers, almost any after market accessory is available, great trail rig! Just a perfect set up IMO. Let me know what info you need and I'll do my best... be sure to look all over this site, it has a wealth of info!

yeah

I have also driven 6cyl and 4cyl 4runners. While the v6 was nice I don't think I would ever trade it for my 22re. Basically the main reason being the 22re's are so simple and easy to fix with so much aftermarket support. I have done a good deal of mods to my 4runner and it gets around. If I was going to leave the truck stock and never look under the hood I would probably go with the v6 for the added power, but wouldn't feel right unless the head gasket had been replaced. Another option which might be good is a turbo 4runner. The 22rte's are a great engine, I recently bought a 87 4x4 pickup with a turbo and will be doing some engine mods shortly. They can be "made" to put out a lot of power and have the same amount of torque as the v6. The only thing is the turbo 4runners only came with the auto transmission. The modded out 4runner compared to the stock turbo truck is about the same power, although my 4runner is not done till I get my cam installed. Personally I like the first generation trucks and 4runners much better than the 2nd 3rd and even 4th gen. The only reason I can see getting a v6 is the fact that you can swap in a 5vze from a 95-2002 truck very easily. Either way you will be happy. BTW here a link to a picture of my 4runner:
