Lifting

Well.. I always thought i would be the different one and lower my 87 yota... But know i am reconsidering it.. While i was driving home tonight i ran over a nice little brand someone through in the street, I couldn't see it until i was on it and then it was too late heard a nice like whap for it hitting something and got a little stressed.. When i got home i slid under and took a look, luckily it looks like it hit a nice little support bar that was wielded to both sides of my frame a little before the oil pan (looks like it was added after the truck was bought) so no new oil pan dings or anything of that nature. I am seriously thinking about give the truck a little bit of a lift. If i was to say go up 4 inches what would be the easiest way to do it and the cheapest (but safest).

What you want from your lift will determine how you lift it and how much it will cost. If you want more ground clearence you will need a suspention lift. If you just want it to sit a little higher you could do a body lift. Both will let you put bigger tired on the yota. A body lift is by far the cheepest way to go.

Sounds good. I am really looking for more ground clearance and better view. How much do body lifts run for? Can i get the parts and a couple of auto savy friends and avoid a shop, for both? If not how would you recommend finding a reputable shop? What parts would i need, for each? Different leaf springs for the bed and different coils?

isn't ground clearance only acheivable by tire size? i mean, you put a 4 inch lift kit on a truck and leave the stock tires, your not gonna have gained any clearance, just more room to stuff your tires, where as you put 33's underneath it, then you've gained more clearance

The only thing to remember about body lifts is that weird gap between the bumper and the truck. I hate that gap, which is why I would never get a body lift. I'm sure there's a way to cover it up somehow though.

I am eventually planning on larger tires as well after a lift. I was just wondering what would be the best and cheapest way to go since i don't plan on off-roading with the truck. And with bigger tires will i need speedo changed or anything along those lines?

first off, your gonna need to decide how big of a tire you want to run. second, your speedo will be off if you go to a larger tire, i have 33's on my truck and its off about 5 in city, and 10 on the freeway, i think
another thing you might want to think about is, depending on how big a tire you want, regearing will be another issue.
i think if your just looking for a little more ground clearance, and your not gonna take it offroading, 31's would be a good size tire and that would be pretty easy to fit with a bl i would think. im not a big fan of bl's, would rather cut the fenders, but thats just me. and you have to worry about the gaps, and then relocate the bumpers. but let us know what size tire you want to run.

Thanks EWAYota.. i will check out some 31's and some places for a body lift. I haven't really decided how big i want to go with the tires. I want something bigger but not so over powering big it makes things ridiculous.

I may also add a 4" SUSPENSION LIFT to my truck so keep the suggestions coming.

The increments between a 1" BL and 4" BL should make a difference on whether or not there is a gap exposed.

No way dude, are you serious?

Anything above a 3" body lift and you are getting into crazy fab work anyway.

Guess i will have to go with a lower inch lift then.. I am not up to having tons of fab work done.. well.. the pocketbook isn't at least

I am considering a 2 inch lift (50.8mm). I have 128,000 miles on my pickup and don't know when the slow 3 will give. I want to replace the motor with something better!

Check out 4crawlers body lift kits.
He has EVERYTHING you need for it, new bumper brackets (or adapters, can't remember)to get rid of the "gap".
I've got his 1" BL on mine, it was the easiest mod I have done.

Yep, 4crawler is the way to go. Check it out. Mine was $175, but I had to tack on an extra $68 for aux body mounts on my 96.

Roger Brown BL's are sweet. Very satisfied.



Of course, I dont know the difference between a 4" and 1" so dont listen to me.
