I was thinking about people that have their vehicles published in magazines (ie. readers rides) and sometimes they remove the number plates or use a fake plate with "Type Z Racing" or something.

Often when you're doing a trip with a club there seems to be people taking photos everywhere and I'm sure some of you guys would be worried about photos of your rig popping up anywhere on the internet.
Has anyone thought about a clip-on cover that could be used to both hide your number plate, and at the same time would give you some advertising space for the club you run with?

One idea I came up with is to buy one of those clear number plate covers that are designed to clip over the front of the plate, then spray it black. A bit like those headlights covers from AutoVentShade.

Anyone else like to generate some conversation?

I wouldn't mind something like that. However, the only problem I could think of would be the police. He in Colorado, you're vehicle has to be registered and insured with a clearly displayed tag in order to cruise the trails. Otherwise, the forestry service can issue you a fine.

Knowing my tendencies, i'd forget to remove the fake ones and get pulled over. Then again, my screen name and e-mail addy IS my liscense plate # so I don't really care if my plates are on the net.

I asked a few other guys and it seems that around here, unless you're doing circle-work up at the farm, or playing in the mud pit, normal road rules apply for any gazetted road.

I guess if I ran across PC Plod out in his Landcruiser, he wouldn't be a happy chappy.

Ya know this came up a while back and someone mentioned why be worried about your license plate on the net when about 5,000 people see it everyday on your way to work? Just for my clarification what could someone do with your plate # anyways? Will the DMV just give out info to anyone?

Yeah good point UKMyers. I guess it's just that on the internet people will discuss all those expensive goodies they've installed that may not be visible from the outside.

Well in the movies it looks like just about anyone can do a vehicle check

Hmm.... ooooh, that's right, that nerdy kid with the laptop!

Mind you some of those hot-wire sequences are probably quite accurate. Without meaning to turn this into an anti-theft thread (actually it was already) we had this caravan/camping show here earlier in the year. This guy had fitted the entire ARB accessory list to his 1996 hilux, even left his full tool box and fishing gear on board, and someone simply drove it off! He didn't like immobilisers coss he once immobilised himself while travelling up north in remote Australia.

In Colorado you used to be able to get anyone's name and address by havinr the county clerk and recorder search a plate #. In the past few years they changed that so that's no longer the case.

As far as thiefs knowing what I have... Come and get it so I can start over!!

I kid. I love my truck but I doubt anyone else would like it very much. Its one of the great benefits of owning a beat up rusty dented high mileage BROWN underpowered TURD. No one would want to steal it when there are so many nicer trucks out there for the taking.

That's not entirely true. I was able to locate the name and address of a vehicle owner for a co-worker about 6 months ago. All she gave me was the plate number.
