Leaky rear main 5VZ

Shop quoted like $800. I know the seal is less than $10. Should I attempt this job myself? I am mechanically inclined. Is it better/easier to remove the tranny or engine? Also, any tips or how to's? Thanks in advance

How bad is the leak?

If it's minor - I'd not touch it. Also make absolutely sure it's not the valve covers leaking down the back.

If you have an automatic, I'd replace the flex plate while down there. Obviously if it's stick - the clutch.

If you have not done the timing belt yet I'd pull the engine and do everything that way. If you have, I'd drop the trans.

Leaks start from the top down. Start with timing belt, tune up and valve cover gaskets. Grab some brake cleaner or pressure washer and clean up the oil dirty area . Then monitor for leaks.
If you want to do it all at once, yank the motor and reseal the motor while its on a stand. Of just pull the transmission and swap the rear main.

The weird thing is it leaks while not running. It sits at work all day, and there are spots under it. I can see it coming outta the front of the bellhousing too.

Clean the crap out of the engine bay, then watch to see where it comes from. Could be valve covers leaking.
