LACKING POWER.. What do i do??

My 99 4runner is high on mileage and low on power.. she is noticably slower now at 180k than she was years ago at 115k..

The only thing i have on is an AEM Intake, which seemed to help a little.. what are your opinions on things like..

Exhaust? what sounds good & performs well?

Throttle body spacer?

350 shot of Nitrous?

Motor Rebuild? - Anyone have any recommendations on companies that do toyota builds?

New motor swap? i've seen rebuilt motors from a company on ebay for 1,000 with the core swap.. is this a nightmare waiting to happen?

... I love my truck, and i dont wanna get rid of it.. but i feel like i'm driving on 3 cylinders.. it sucks.

sounds more like maintenence than modification if its lacking as much power as you say it is. bad coil pack? plugs, wires? hopefully not an injector? check with a mechanic to diagnose the problem.

I like the Jardine exhaust system (click the link to my vids in my sig). Don't expect large gains from anything if you're N/A. I tried throwing every mod you can think of on my N/A engine (when it was N/A) and nothing made a huge difference. Even with intake/headers/exhaust I didn't feel like it was that much faster.

Personally, I'd sell that AEM (probably get $150 for it on ebay) and do the deckplate or elbow mod, ISR mod, O gasket mod (I sell these), coolant bypass mod (been running this for years with no issues) and exhaust and call it a day. Unless you go SC'd ($3K minimum with tuning mods) you will never get a noticeable increase in HP in N/A form.

(Obviously make sure all maintenance items are up to speed before you go throwing parts at it though).

x3 on maintenance. Mine has 191K and still runs strong. Along w/ a tune up, clean out your IAC, throttle body and MAP sensor - this can make a huge difference and it's cheap and easy to do yourself. There are some good write-ups here on YT for some step-by-step instructions.

I doubt you would be getting something of the same quality that was originally in there to begin with.

Really listen for a second--at 165k on my motor the engine builder said it was in great shape internally. Still had the hatch marks. Replace your electronics like the TPS, O2's, MAF(or clean), Get the injectors serviced, replace all that stuff or clean the hell out of it. Also run good oil (it wont help power--but it will keep your motor internals happy), Plug wires. Do all that "stuffs" and just get it done and over with so now you know you have a new starting point for replacing the next round of parts.

GAURANTEE YOUR INJECTORS ARE DIRTY. I also would remove the lower intake manifold and clean it out. There are passages in there that bleed air directly to the injector tips to help atomization, fuel economy, and power. The look like little cuts right where the injectors sit.

189,000 on my 5vz and it runs better than new

better mpg than rating

hauls arse

creeps with precision on bony roads

---
throwing mods at a motor that -acts tired- won't fix anything. find
the actual problem and fix that first....

First off.. I'm extremely impressed with the responses.. just one day and, well, look.. I've never been part of a forum, but YotaTech is my new best friend...

back to the truck..

about 12,xxx miles ago i had a coil pack go bad on #2, so i changed the whole setup, 3 new coils, new wires, spark plugs... all that.. seemed to improve throttle response, which was nice.. I haven't done any of the other maintenance everyone is talking about.. which is probably what it needs.. few questions though..

what is TPS?
what is MAF?
what is IAC?

.. should get my injectors cleaned, or should i look into purchasing new injectors? possibly larger CC??

Your truck could prob do good off an OEM tune-up.

TPS = throttlr position sensor
MAF = mass air flow sensor
IAC = idle air control valve
These could very likely be causing your problems especially if they have never been cleaned (MAF, IAC and throttle body) in 180K miles.

ISR mod = intake silencer removal (this wouldn't apply to you since you don't have the stock air box and plastic tubing) .

A can of BG 44K does wonders for fuel injectors. I had an older Maxima that lost most of its power one day, I suspected a fuel injector was clogged and 5 minutes after I put in the BG 44k... problem solved

Correct, the ISR mod would only apply if you had the stock airbox and associated components. I agree though, let's get your lack of power figured out first.
