killed 2nd gen... now 3rd gen potential???

Alright... i might get flamed by the 2nd genner's... oh well.

I bought my 95 Limited in May...
here's a pic of it in June.

100k and for $too much...
32k later... this last week in the middle of Wyoming it decided to throw a rod.
After getting it back to Colorado Springs, i realized it just wasn't worth getting it running again.
why?
1. slow as hell
2. gas mileage
3. i really overall didn't like the powerplant nor the auto tranny.
4. lower towing ability
5. upping to the 3.4 would have been more $$ than to upgrade to a 3rd gen.

So, i'm hoping to get a 99 Limited... but i have some questions.
Here are some pics of the 3rd gen i might sign for tomorrow.

I got them down to $12.9k and begged them go give me $4k for the 2nd gen.
It's almost completely stock w/ RRlocker and towpackage (unused)

But I have some questions... the original price was $14.9, but the front bumper will need to be replaced (well that's what i told him, it looks like someone got a little happy in traffic) haha, well... can't get a 100% perfect used car...

Here are my questions about it, i've searched plenty...
1. I have never seen a 99 limited that was all 1 color, i thought only the sports had the mono color scheme... that limited's had the 2-color.
2. The Auto climate control, does the LCD display light up at night? this one doesn't, the buttons do but the actual display is dark.
3. is there anyone that would want to trade emblems? i hate the gold!!! (if i get it)
4. i saw in the maintenance logs that the waterpump was replaced at 45k, anything i should worry about?
5. I didn't see any tbelt or any other major work done, is there anything that would be absolutely dire to keeping it alive?

thanks for everything =)
i love 4runners, i couldn't handle not getting another one... just the 3.0 was a pos IMO.

im not sure about the color scheme.

i *think* the climate control should light up along with the rest of the controls/buttons

emblems - http://www.4runners.org/articles/blackpearl/

timing belt will probably need to be changed soon if it hasnt been already.

sorry I forgot to mention I pulled the tbelt cover and the belt LOOKS ok, but that could be deceiving. I don't have 100% of the service records.
oh, compression test was perfect to specs.

With only 80k miles timing belt doesn't need to be done for a long time...I did mine at the recommended 90k but a lot of people have gotten way more miles out of them.

Looks like a pretty good deal, the limiteds had the single color paint job too not just the sports.

You can't exactly just trade emblems, the adhesive backing would be ruined once removed. Just order some black pearls from trdparts4u.com or get the chrome ones either way...I hate the gold too!

Looks pretty good man, decent price too!

Let us know how it all turns out!

well, i guess that it's Imperial Jade Mica...
according to: http://www.top4runners.com/ja/runhist3.html
in 99 color-matched/keyed cladding was optional on the limited.

You wont regret the switch, don't listen to those jealous 2nd gen owners. I swapped my 93 for an 01 a few months ago, and love it. I didn't realize how slow the 3.0 was until I drove the new one. And gas mileage went from about 18 to 25 mpg.

The only downside was the price, but it's only money, right.

Cool

Just paint your emplems yourself... don't spend more than like $10 on them.

Painted Emblems

As an ex-2nd gen owner, the switch was one of the best moves I made...my mileage is SO much better and its much less maintenance.

Good idea to switch man!

The bulbs that light up the HVAC controls appear to burn out early since my mom's '99's console just went out a month ago and there was a thread around here yesterday on how to replace the bulbs but I can't find it now.

this one?
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f5/part-ac-faceplate-bulb-40435/
Auto CLimate Control light bulb location/replacement

The auto climate control in the 99-01 Toyota 4Runner Limited has (4) replacable bulbs. (2) light up the LCD display and the other (2) light up the following buttons: Auto, Out/T, Mode, *Off, A/C & the outer rotorary controls.

81850-35020 LCD Display Bulb
81850-35030 Background bulb for the rotary/function buttons

In addition to the above (4) bulbs there are (5) LEDs (not user serviceble) that light up each button when they are activated. The LEDs that are directly soldered to the PCB assembly and not meant to be replaced by end user.
To replace any of the bulbs listed above, you will need to remove the entire climate control out of the dash and dissamble it in order to replace the bulbs. (Dont panic, its not that bad as it sounds!!).
Accessing the dash
In order to access the dash you will need to remove the cup holder plastic assembly piece, the gear trim panel and the dash trim.
1. Start by opening the center console door. The cup holder is then removed by gently pulling it up.
2. Next the gear trim panel is removed in the same fashion. If your model is a 4WD model then pay attention the plastic around the 4WD lever. This snaps out from trim by lightly tugging on it.
3. Finally, the dash piece is removed by gently pulling on it. There a (5) clips that hold the trim to the dash. I found that starting from the bottom and working your way up does the trick.
4. Once the dash piece is out, you will need to disconnect all of the connectors. All of these are quick disconnect, so just press on a tab and they are released. Remember to double check that they are all back in when the dash piece before placing it back.
Removing the Climate Control
1. Prior to removing it determine which bulb is bad by turning the ignition on and noticing which area is dim.
2. There are (3) screws that secure the climate control to the dash. (2) on the passenger side and (1) the drivers side. Remove all (3) with a phillips screwdriver.
3. The climate control should just come out at this point. Next disconnect the (2) electrical connectors (quick disconnect) behind the climate control.
4. Remove the (2) phillip screws (located behind the black control/trim) that secure the entire LCD/Black trim to the actual control box.
5. This should give you access the front of the PCB (Printed Circuit Board).
6. The replaceable bulbs are identified as PL1, PL2, PL3 and PL4. PL1 and PL2 are the larger ones (display bulbs). PL2 and PL3 smaller bulbs (light up the remaining of the buttons).
7. The bulbs are removed by turning them clockwise with your hand or a small flatblade screwdriver.
8. Insert the new bulb, re-connenct the (2) quick disconnects from step 3 and turn the ignition ON to test.
9. Put everything back together by Reversing the process and you're done!!
