Key Help

My wife has a Corolla and we went to get a key made and come to find out it has a transponder in it..We'll have to go to the dealer to get one made..Here is where the problem lies..It will cost $45 for the key and $80 to activate it..I asked what does that mean..He said they'll have to conact Toyota to get the key code.>So I called toyota after that phone call..They have the key code and gave me a case number and said when I find a dealer I am gonna get a key made from for me to call them and they'll contact the dealer and give them a key code...So what the heck are they charging me $80 activaction fee for????Of course the Dealer I bought it from said they would make me a spare ( nothing in written just his word) now backing out of agreement..Help shed some lite of the fees..Thanks

You can program the key yourself, there is some kinda method using the ignition and switching it on and off and junk..

well, these new transponder keys are a different ani-mule. on our Town and Country, you can program a new key to the system by going thru a set of steps with the on board car computer, turning the key on and off etc, and that will match a new key to your car. Toy prolly has a similar deal. The dealer has a machine they can do it with as well. I got my info from a key purveyor on EBay.

Update

Several Toyota Dealers are chrging $80 to program the transponder keys..I did find one that did not..It is sad that they are charging that much money to program a key that only takes a few mins to do..
