K&N Air Filter?

I am thinking about putting a K&N Air Filter in my Runner.

Does anybody have an opinion on these filters/kits?

Is it worth it to shell out the $200+ bucks for the kit or should I just put a filter in alone?

Would there be a better purchase? (i.e. different brand)

Thanks in advance.

This topic comes up kind of often - recently something like once every 2-3 weeks.

Try a search and you'll find A LOT of opinions and experiences.
By the way, welcome to YT!

EDIT:
If you're thinking about replacing the air intake check out the deckplate mod. Cheap, easy and it'll save you the $200 for other mods... and if you stay here, you'll need all the extra $$ you can save

The front pages of Peformance Products catalogue for Toyotas had a write up about them this month. You might check that out. When I compared just hi-flo air filters, K&N was $68 and Amsoil was $40 and the Amsoil is said to let in more air, according to Gadget's dyno testing, so it was a no-"brian"er, cheaper and better...gotta love it.

I have the K&N FIPK on my Toyota Pickup and I love it. I got an increase in my gasmileage by about 2-3 miles per gallon. I have heard and read the articles about the Amsoil Filter. I guess it comes down to cost and preference.

I personally love my K&N and wouldn't trade it for the world.

Chris-this is true in regards to the 3.0 v6 - but the 3.4 3rd gen motor is a totally different horse.

it depends what engine your talking about....

Wow. It looks like I started a popular topic that has been discussed before.

Thanks for the input. I'll let y'all know how it goes.

I see you have a 3rd Gen so do this. Drop in an Amsoil Filter, do the deckplate and ISR mod and call it good. I have heard GREAT things about the FIPK kit on the 3.slow. I did the 3.0 ISR and love it but I have heard BAD things about the FIPK for the 3.4. Stick with the nearly free mods. Look in the tech section for a write up on how to do all the above mentioned stuff....heck I have time here's the link

K&N tastes like butt.

I put in a K&N and got 5mpg/20hp more!!!

No, seriously, K&N is fine for ON-road use only, but for off-road use, all it did was let dust by. sooo i threw it in the trash and went amsoil. The amsoil filters sooo much better!

I have the drop-in K&N in my 90 4Runner (3.0). I'm sure that since it's just a stock replacement piece, it doesn't offer much of any performance gain, but I'm sure it filters out crap better than the stock paper elements. I believe I paid less than $35 for the K&N.
I couldn't justify the cost of the $200+ FIPK unit.

I didn't know that it was that big of a difference between the 3.0 and the 3.4 . I have talked to a lot of people that do the Deckplate mod on the 3.4s but I didn't know that it was because the K&N FIPK didn't help that much. I just figured that it was because it was cheaper.

You should pm Bob (Bob_98SR5). He is good to deal with, you should contact him. I'm waiting for my paypal money to transfer so I can order my air filter as we speak.
