just got back from the mechanic...

...and it appears i need to have a few things fixed on my new truck

1. theres a big hole in my exhaust manifold, so it sounds like a harley davidson when it's running. at least he doesn't seem to think it's a warped head like i did, so the solution is going to be an exhaust header. price: ~$280

2. need a front axle rebuild. the mechanic told me i should get a rebuild kit and replace the seals since they're leaking, and says it's not too hard to do if you've ever turned a wrench before. it's now on the top of my priority list, hopefully i'll fix it in the next week
price: ???

3. the guy says i need a new rear brake load valve for if i'm going to be towing my boat or hauling anything, for safety reasons
price: $150

i'm sure there's other things, but these are all at the top of my list for right now. all in all, i don't think it's too bad, since i bought the truck(a '79 4x4) for $650 3 days ago, and everything comparable was at least 3 or 4 times that price. guess i'll just have to make up some of the difference with repairs

anybody done the front axle rebuild before? if so, how much work is it, and how much do the replacement parts cost?

$280 bucks for a header is not a bad price, downey offroad wants like 400-500 bucks.

for less that 30-40 bucks you can go to a junk yard and get a stock manifold, i really dont think you will get much of a power gain for the difference in price you would pay.

the front axel rebuild is a pretty big job, you need to pull off the tire, the locking hubs, the axel hub, axel shaft and there are too many seals then you want to mess with.....

yeah, i looked at 4crawler's axle rebuild writeup, i'm going to at least study the instructions hard and find a competent friend to give me a hand, or if worse comes to worse take it to a shop and have them do it

the guy says the header will cost between 280 and 300 installed, which i don't think is too bad of a deal. he also said that the exhaust manifolds are notorious for failing on older trucks and i'd be better off with a header. i'll take his word for it because he regularly wheels older toyota pickups and owns 4 of them. i figure i'd be upgrading to a header sooner or later, and it's barely 100 more for them to do that instead of a stock manifold so why not do it now
