Question ISO Cheap 22RE perfomance mods

I am new to the yota life so I'm lloking for recommended upgrades for my truck. I run a 94 4x4 22re 5sp. It is stock except for the 31s. I pull a motorcycle trailer alot and want some more power.

I've done a lot of searching lc engineering, engbuldr, etc and lots of places list cams. Is this a common upgrade and if so what grind is recommended. I've seen a lot of posts about regearing the MAF can this be done a tooth or two on an otherwise stock setup? Does anyone sell a heavier duty set of plug wires? I did a tune up and I run a thicker wire on my lawn mower

Any help would be super.

A cam is a very common thing to do on the 22re, then get some exhaust and intake.

One thing that I would mention is that this topic has been discussed quite a bit. There is a search function that really does come in handy from time to time. No hard feelings, though next time, you might find it more help to use the search funtion.

Also, welcome to Yotatech!!!

I ran TRD cams in my 94 extracab 22re along with a K&N intake, a jacobs ignition, and a flex-a-lite black magic fan. I even sprung for the full Borla exhaust and a 10" TRD clutch. I tried the AFM adjustment, which helped a little I guess, but if you do it be sure to resilicone the cover when you put it back on or else it will corrode and go bad (mine did).

Anyhow, a few words from someone who's tried to make a 22re powerful:
You can spend a fair sum of money and acheive some improvement in power, but if you feel it is underpowered now, gaining 20-30hp probably isn't going to change your opinion too much, and it will cost a bundle. If you really do want more power, get a different truck or look at an engine swap. I probably spent as much on my 94 pickup trying to get it to make some power as the initial 7mgte swap on my 4runner ran me, and there is absolutely no comparison between the two when it comes to power. There may be some people out there who really can be satisfied with just a little bit more power out of their 22re, but I am definitely not one of them, and I would tend to discourage anyone from trying to make one make power. The benefits just aren't worth the investment in my opinion.

*stepping off of soapbox* (sorry for the rant)

Here is what I have done to my 22RE:

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...ds/index.shtml

If you are running 31" tires with 4.10 gears, you might also consider swapping in some 4.56 gears in the axles. That is what the factory installed for the 31" tires available on some trucks/4Runners. That'll give you an honest to goodness 10% boost in performance, as measured by torque to the road.

How can I tell what gears I have? The 31s when on it when I bought it. Is it likely the previous owner would have done the swap? If not how much am I looking for gears? And where is a good place to get them? I guess I'd need 2 sets, fronts and rears? right

its unlikely anyone swapped to 4.56s gears

upgrading would be good, look at your axle code and figure out... what it is from there... 4crawler has a page on his website to decipher your stock gearing...

its a 22re, 30 hp is honestly all you can expect with cam, intake and exhaust... you can do forced induction or an lc engineering motor, but that gets expensive....

Several options to find out what gear you have listed below:

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/4R_TechI...oDetermination

Only way to tell if they have been swapped is to see if they check out different than what the Model Info tag lists. Figure $400-500 per axle (and yes on 4WD you have 2 sets of axles and gear) as a good price for having gear changed, or 4.56 gears are somewhat common from the factory. Look for any similar vinatage truck/4Runner with factory 31" tires and a 5 speed. The 31" 4Runners are aeasy to spot because they'll have the swing out rear tire carrier.

i sometimes think that i'm the only guy out there who's happy with their 22R. my low end torque is great, i just wish it'd rev higher

putting in a cam isn't too bad, but to do it right you have to pull the head and replace the head gasket, as you need to remove the rocker assembly to get at the cam, and its held in by the head bolts. removing those can mess up the seal of the head gasket.

and while you are in the headgasket might as well do the oil pan gasket, the timing chain and oil pump, water pump too.....

Doing the mechanical work is no biggie. I worked in a shop while I put myself through school. The only thing I haven't done is set-up an axle. How hard is that anyway? I'm thinking it's just a time consuming project, but can it be done by a shadetree or are the specialized tools.
I never had the chance to tear into one, I've only replaced the rear-end as a whole assembly a few times. And who is a good place to get gears?
I race motorcycles, bike parts I can help. Truck parts, I no help.

huh? oil pumps typically outlast the engine on these, and why replace the oilpan gasket if it ain't leaking all that stuff is still on the motor when you yank the head. however if you're due for a timing chain, it might not be a bad idea. however, i've got a double roller chain with steel guides and the engine is 2000 miles old, so i don't worry about it

Setting diff gears is a very tedious task, and not many people can do it.
It is worth paying a qualified tech to do it and know it's been done right.

Unless you ready to trash a few gear sets, Id say have someone with some experence setup your gear. Just buying gears and a rebuild kit is expensive enough as it is, but if you decide to setup your own gears you would need to invest a couple hundred dollars in tools. If your plan on regears many times, then its not really worth spending the money to get started on it.

i'm gonna dive right into it. the only special tool you need is a press. well, also a spanner wrench and something to hold the pinion, but you can make those. it's mostly a matter of trial and error, and not being one of the people who say "screw it" and just run even though you have a crummy pattern.

then again, i can tear apart half my engine and put it back together without looking at the book, so maybe i'm different
