Intermittent start problem....help!! (long)
OK.....over the past week my truck has been getting more difficult to turn over and start. Everything, including all the sensors is new on this motor(3.4L 4Runner) so I just thought I had bad fuel. Tried all sorts of FI cleaners to no avail. Well, Saturday morning it would crank for a good 30 seconds to a minute then finally start. Drove to work and couple hours later tried to start it up again and cranked for 30 seconds then fired up. Sunday morning it would not start, gave it 15 minutes to sit then it finally started after long cranking. It set a code for the CEL so I was kinda happy that we may know the problem. Code for Crank Position Sensor.....
A quick rundown: The motor that originally came in the truck had the crank keyway snap so I took every precaution that it would never happen. Brand new crank pulley, new crank, new keyway, new water pump, new oil pump and new crank position sensor.
So, we started with taking out the crank position sensor and it looked fine, just some fine metal shavings on it because it's magnetic. Cleaned if off and tried it again, nothing better......Today I purchased a new crank position sensor from the dealer and tried that. NO GOOD!! It actually started better with the old one in it.......I tested both of them with the ohm meter and they are both within the range for testing ok. NOW WHAT??? I read that people have problems with the fuel pump but I am not getting any codes. I am having my friend take the crank pulley off to check the reluctor wheel to make sure I have no teeth missing on that and keep my fingers crossed..
ANY IDEAS?????
