Piece
Unsrewd 4 wheel drive knob.
Pop out the black plastic piece behind it that runs up to the middle console. I think you have to open the middle console lid to get it to pop off.
Then just pop it out as it has 4 clips I think. Nothing hard at all.

like brian said, but adding:

look at the first pic under step one. See where it says "S"? there are two screws on either side. remove them. then, between the two S's, lift up on that part and it should pop right out.

hey brian,
yeah, i've pulled it out a few times w/o unscrewing the screws, but it is much easier putting that piece back in because the rear (closest to armrest) snaps are so close to the cupholder part. it *can* be done, but i find it much easier to snap it in w/o having to force it in.
same objective, same result, but different method

You have to grit your teeth just right and open your lips in the shape of a small egg and humm like a copy machine and it pops loose and goes back in nice and easy!

Not to disagree with anything you other guys are saying, but I've got a 2002 SE and you don't have to unscrew anything. Just push the back end of the piece towards the front of the truck and lift up. It should pop out. Then the 4wd lever's boot unclips from the piece. Hope this helps.

all i am saying is that by removing the screws on the side, it is much easier to take the piece on and off. thats it and thats all (in the voice of bubb rubb)!

well i tried it bob's way, and my runner won't start. thanks a lot bob.
haha i actually did loosen the screws. but yeah i was able to get it off just fine. i knew it wouldn't be hard, just wanted to know the proper way. got a trick up my sleeve, so thanks for the advice guys.
