Instrument cluster light problem???

The dimmer dial for my dash lights (96 4Runner) is not working but the lights themselves are on at full intensity, I can't think of a reason as to why this would be but I know Toyota has been known to do weird things with tying electrical components together as an indicator of a blown fuse or bad connection etc. I was wondering if anyone knows if that's the case here of if the switch itself is just bad. It just started doing this yesterday FWIW and I did pull and replace the fuse with the truck running just before this started coincidentally.

Hey bud,

Perhaps the potetiometer is broken. Maybe the wiper came disconnected from the shaft and is stuck in the full on position (Where most of us leave it). Maybe it corroded there from moisture and broke when you turned it. That would be my guess. Does it feel easier to turn than normal. Might just need to replace it.

The dimmer switch is a pretty easy replacement. Be glad you didn't burn out a dash bulb. Saw this one on eBay a while back. Contact the guy and see if he still has it for sale.

thanks for the tips guys. I'll check into these options and post back if that doesn't do it.

Maybe I'll scavenge the dimmer from my truggy if nothing else...

Hey let me know what you find out about this, mine is doing the same thing, except mineis really dim and the dimmer switch does nothing. The other night the gauges weren't even lit at all at one point.

Thought I'd get this old thread going again and see how you made out. I've had this same problem for a while now. I replaced the potentiometer today. I checked it with a meter and it seems to be working fine, but the dash lights still will not dim when it's turned. It's not a huge problem, because I like them full on anyway. But, I also like everything in my truck to work. You know what I mean. Anyone have any ideas?
