Installing new Evaporator Core

My '95 4Runner started making an electrical short type of noise when the A/C is on. I had a tech charge it up and it worked fine for 3 weeks. Now it is back doing the same thing. He tested today for a leak and said it is coming from the evap core.
He is a Cadillac tech and did not want to install a new one (too much trouble with the dash).
He said the leak showed up around the vents and around the core itself.
My cost on one is $228 but Toyota wants $350 for labor (4.5 hours).
Is this something I can do myself if I have someone discharge the 134 freon?

Thanks
Shane

Whats your mechanical skill level? Could be a bad evap core, also could be a leaking fitting, line or switch inside. A good AC mech would be able to pinpoint the leak first. Partial disassembling of the dash and evap housing will probably be required but if it something simple to fix the effort is worth it.
