installed a rebuilt 3.0 v6 in my 90 toyota
it cranks but wont start and it backfires every few cranks

i installed the timing belt properly like the manual said so but i still tend to think it has something to do with timing because i get spark and i smell fuel.

any ideas
i havent checked plugs yet

Check your spark plug wires they maybe reversed also check and make sure your distributor rotor is set to the correct position.

if it still doesnt work, rotate the crank 180 degrees and try again

i set the distributor to cylinder number one and it kinda starts if i hold the gas and then it dies but when it runs it runs horrible, like barely at all

if it runs but only with gas, i bet you have a timing issue... try rotating the distributor while its running, or adavance it a gear tooth or retard it a gear tooth

Did you plug the MAF back in?

Get a timing light and check the timing!
You need to use the jumpers on the OBD connector when setting it tho.

Is the check engine light on at all?
Make sure you have plugged in all the wire connectors and check for vacum leaks as well.
Be patient and I am sure you will find the problem.

ive tried rotating the distributor but tomrorw ill try it some more i went and bought some plugs and wires even though i know thats not the problem

i dont know if i mentioned this but i broke two sensors in the back or the engine and i dont have them yet but i wanted to start it cause i figured it would start but maybe not

they are the black one and the green/blue one

Also from your posts sounds like the distributor is too far retarded. If you are sure about your plug wires and know it was set on number 1 on the compression stroke try advancing the distributor one notch on the gear.

Um... broken sensors could cause it to not start. But if you are getting spark and fuel then it sounds like timing. I would try starting from scratch on the timing. Do as the other posts have told you on setting timing.

after i put the wires and plug in it tonight it started and i realized i have a huge exhaust leak so i unbolted it be4 the cat and its hella loud so i couldnt hear how good the engine was running but i noticed when id give it gas the engine would die or start to die

now when i put the distributor back into the head the gear spins it off to where when the rotor lines up with #1 the distributor is turned all the way to the right which is advanced all the way? right?

how could i correct this

take the distributer out and rotate it 1 tooth position....

Before you pull and rotate the distrutor first make sure the #1 cylinder is at TDC which will be the first cylinder on the passengers side closest to the battery the power steering is on the #1 side as well. You turn the pulley until the mark is lined up at 0 to verify the cylinder is at TDC you can pull the #1 plug and take a phillips screw driver gently put it in the spark plug hole and see if goes in if it stops short you know the cylinder is at TDC if it goes all the way in and doesn't you know it still isn't at TDC turn it until the cylinder is all the way up at TDC. It's a old trick but works.
Also were the cams gears set on the marks as well? Check your distributor is it lined up with the #1 cylinder if not take it out turn it back or forward whatever needs to be done.
Put it back together and have someone turn the distributor it until you can start it if it still is a issue pull it out turn it one tooth the opposite way.
The next obvious things to check for is your EFI fuse in and is it good?
Are you getting spark?
Pull a plug out connect a wire to it turn it over make sure you are getting a spark to it?

Likely if he has attempted to start it several times the oil pump is now primed. Toyota says to do prime the oil pump turn it over with the EFI fuse pulled and the distributor wire off and turn it over until the pressure starts to come up. It makes it easier for the starter to turn it over if you pull the plugs to do this. It takes the load off turning the engine because the cylinders aren't compressing air.

Anyways if this still isn't it start fuel troubleshooting maybe you have a fuel leak somewhere like the fuel rails check the obvious connections where you disconnected the fuel lines the first time when you pulled the engine.

thansk guy for all the help i turned the rotor one gear to the left and she fired right up and ran great
