Inspiration from Joey :)

Hey Guys Joey (UKMyers) came over to Northampton to visit today and we did the 2nd Gen Airbox mod to my truck.

Heres the before picture



As you can see my airbox has not been cleaned out since the last time me and Joey went wheeling

Heres the airbox all cleaned up and with the wholes drilled. We used a 3/8" drill bit.



I now seem to have a little more low down power at around 2500 rpm, and the engine seems more responsive

Many thanks to Joey for helping me do this mod I now seem to be driving round with my window open, listening to the throaty sound coming from the airbox!

If any 2nd gen owners are thinking of doing this mod, I would recommend it without a doubt.....

got a question, wouldnt that allow water to come into the air box?

I did that to mine a couple of weeks ago. The holes on the back surface of the airbox are actually higher than the front air inlet. I also drilled my drain hole larger in case I do suck more water in.

BTW - I think removing the restrictive pipe and plastic behind the headlight did most of the improvements with this mod but now I can cover the main air inlet with my hand and the engine runs great with the air it draws from those holes so it may help in some situations. Can't wait to get down to sealevel next month and see what better air does for my rig.

Ya if your fording a river and the water is up that high in which case your going to have a whole lot of other probs than water in your engine. The FIPK kit leaves the filter completely exposed.

Water does get in your airbox - that is why there is a drain hole in the bottom of it. I made the drain hole bigger to drain water faster but even stock water can get in.

I just did some quick math cuz im a dork....lol

49 - 3/8" holes equates out to 5.4sq in of surface area.

the incoming "opening" from the spoiler is what, 3"? That would be approximately 7sq in, so in my estimation this mod is worth it!

Since I dont do any water fording, or try not to that is, I'm content with my FIPK - was a bit pricey though....

Incidentelly, I left my factory spoiler inplace with the FIPK. Do you think Ill gain or loose anything by removing it? Im thinking no, but what do you guys think?

5.4 sq. in is quite something. Is that greater than the sq. in on an actual deck plate used by 3rd gens?

this sounds like a pretty good mod. what about in an offroading situation with mud and dust. would these wholes allow elements such as those get to the airbox? ha, sorry for the idiotic questions:pat:

You could coverthe holes with a screen, that would solve that problem... And it appears there is already a problem with that happening to the stock airbox, so not a lot would change. Thats why you have an airfilter

Might seem like a dumb question but, can this be done to a 3rd gen 3.0 turbo diesel... would it make any difference???

Post a pic of your airbox. I think it is similar to the 2nd gen gas airbox we have.

It looks like your airbox draws air from the fender - and therefore directly from outside. Ours trys to pull air in from behind the headlight and doesn't seem to get enough air. You could drill holes in the bottom of yours also - but if you are directly drawing air in from the fender area you probably get lots of air already. One thing to check is if there is another restrictive piece of plastic inside the fender that can be removed - that worked wonders for my 5.0 Mustang.

I did something simmilar to my 22re inlet. I removed the elbow pipe from behind the headlight and increased the hole in the airbox to 3". I get that nice rooooaaarrr sound as well. I was thinking about drilling holes in the bottom of the box as well but am not sure if that would make a difference. I did drill a couple of 1/4" holes in the low spots to drain any water that might get in, but now I might drill a bunch more if that will help. The olny difference is I have the rectangular box not the round type. Think more holes would help, even though it is only a 22re?

Sure will, and I made the hole it left even bigger (3") in mine.

sweet, i just did it. how did you make your hole bigger..and do you have anything to cover it up (like the deckplate mod)?

No, I don't really do any water crossings that could ever get that high. But I did drill some 1/4" holes in the bottom to allow for drainage just in case. All I did was traced a piece of 3" round stock I had at work and cut it out with my roto-zip with a woodcutting bit and smothed it out.
I am thinking about adding a piece of screen to keep out the bugs and stuff, I might even go up to 4" also.

oh yeah one more thing, do i have to reset anything?. i have been reading up on all of these mods in the tech section and some talk about resetting things and pulling fuses and such..?
