Ingnition switch wire question

I'm installing an alarm sytem which has the ability to remotely start the vehicle. When I press the button on the remote to start the vehicle, it cranks but will not start. Two wires I'm unsure I have connected correctly are one, the tach wire. They said to either connect it to the coil, which on my vehicle, which I can't find, so the other choice was the tach gauge itself. They said the voltage reading should be between 1 and 6 volts. The wire I tested, seems so to do that, plus it raised in voltage as I pressed on the gas peddle. The other wire they wanted connected was the ignition wire. They said that when testing, it must stay at 12 volts even when I turn the ignition switch from run to start. It seems that every wire I find goes to zero when I go to start the vehicle. There must be a wire somewhere that supplys voltage to the system so that when the starter cracks, the vehicle will start. I tried looking at the Chilton Manual wire diagram, but that was no help. Are they any ignition experts out there?

What is the make, model and year of vehicle that this is going on. There are a few sites on the net that will give wire colors, but make sure and search for remote start wiring.

Does your truck actually say Tacoma on it? I ask because 95 was a change-over year in mid 95

No, it does not say Tacoma, but when I go to the parts store, it seems the 96 stuff works.

Ok, is the V6 a 3.0 12 valve or 3.4 24 valve?

Oh ok, you're in the right section then but I can't help with that model ign switch.

Best try and find the EWDs for your model.

Wow! Great documentation! Pictures are cool. My starter relays are a little different on my alarm, still not quite sure which wires to tie them into off the ignition switch. On mine there are 2 ignition wires acording to the wiring diagram from 12volt.com. So I'm going to try those. On your picture, (I tried zooming in) to try and see what wire you used for the tach. Which on was it?

On those pics you'll see some that are pinouts for the alarm and you'll also see that next to each, I put the wire color on the 4runner wire harness that I tied into (I tried to get the colors close enough to make sense, tied up = didn't use at all).

The tach wire I tied into was a black wire going into the back of the instrument cluster. Yours may be different but IIRC there were only 2 black wires back there so you should have a 50/50 shot of getting it the first time. The way you check to get the right one is to use a digital multimeter and measure the DC voltage (20V scale) on the wire with the engine on. The voltage should vary when you step on the gas.

For the remote start relays, my primary ignition was black/red and my secondary ignition was black/yellow.......but yours could be different.

Here might be a better diagram than the12volt.com

toyota tach can be found at interior or exterior diagnostic port. The voltage will change in the tenth, maybe a whole.

what unit are you using exactly?

It sounds like our wire colors are the same, so I'll try it again on my next day off, (Thursday) I work a 10 hr day, so don't feel like doing much when I get home. Sounds like this is going to work now. Thanks for the help. To answer profuse007's question, I have a Clifford 50.5X alarm.
