Illegal taillight covers??

Ok I searched first and found info close but not on.. If it needs to be moved it's ok.

Does anyone know if those taillight covers you see like on Dodge where the ram is cut out of the taillight cover are illegal?? I'm in Washington State so I know some of the state laws are different.

"No additional lamp, reflective device or other motor vehicle equipment shall be added which impairs the effectiveness of the lamp standard."

So yes, they are against the law. The only exception is if you pay to have your vehicle, with the covers added "re certified". Basically it's a full vehicle inspection and includes making sure that the stop lamps are still visible at 300' in daylight with the covers. I understand the re certification generally runs around $500 or more, requires a reservation and they need your vehicle for as much as two weeks time.

sounds like all the laws that say it's illegal to change the size of your exhaust, put different sized tires on, or tint your windows. it's all a bunch of baloney that the cops have to pull out of their sleeves to get your if you're an ass to them.

Alot of the newer dodge trucks have them and came with them from the factory. I sincerely doubt you will get hassled for them.

I've spent a lot of time reading the motor vehicle codes for Washington and I am not familiar with ANY of those... It IS illegal to make your exhaust louder than stock or to go over a certain percentage (35%) in tint, but it's not the police state you make it sound like. Bitter much?

An exception to the general rule doesnt make the general rule void

Hmm, well normally I'd say I'll just ask one of the cops that comes into my work but even they have different answers.
