Yes, there were some 84 pickups with 22REs.
That was a 4runner, but in those days it didn't matter - they hadn't yet diverged into different rigs.

All you need to do is call a dealer and have them check your VIN, the computer will bring up the engine and even the engine serial number.

2WD SR5's had EFI in 84. 4 Runners and 4X4's got the new version head and block EFI in 85. In my opinion, the 84's are better in terms of effiency. My 84 EFI gets 25-28 in town and 32-36 on the highway. I think this is due to the larger combustion chamber, swirl type head and domed pistons. One way to tell if you have the older or newer version is by the valve cover. The rounder valve cover is the older version (81-84) while the square cover is the newer (85-95)

That particular mudhole was a bit deeper than inticipated...

Only weeks after I bought that 4Runner I stopped in at the dealership to visit my dad, the 4Runner was absolutely covered in mud. The service manager (at the time the service manager was not a car guy, nor even mechanically inclined, he was that special breed we all know specifically called an "asshole") told me I had better not bring that rig in for warranty work after treating it that way. I promptly replied with "Care to put that comment in writing?" He shut up. (That guy didn't last long either...)

EFI started in '83 in the Celicas. 1984 pickups and 4Runners did come with EFI and used the same ecu and injection system as the Celica I believe.
Since I wasted so much time putting this chart together you can see how the ecus interchanged:

Here are pictures of my 22re from my 85 4runner. This is it freshly rebuilt with a new Cam, oversize valves and a little overbore.

And here it is in the runner.

thanks for everything guys. you guys helped alot. maybe if i paid a little more attention i could have figured it out my self. so i was checking my spark plugs the other day and putting a new positive battery cable end on and battery post covers front ends wrecked so with out covers the hood touchs and shorts the battery. but while i was doing that i looked at the back of my engine compartment and saw a metal plate rivited back there and it say toyota pickup 22re-c so i guess thats the stock motor now is there a difference between a 22re and a 22re-c motor or are they the same.
