Well, I got my hubs today. I broke them down and started cleaning them. Once I got around to cleaning the body of them I noticed some hairline cracks on the outter edge where the conewashers go. Apparently whoever removed the hubs hit the side of the hub with a hammer right where the conewasher is. This spot has been flattened a little but not by much. I'm a little worried about these cracks. I was thinking that the only stress on this part of the hub is going to be from torquing the cone washers. I hope this isn't going to be a problem. I already spent a few hours cleaning them up and getting them ready for paint.

I really hope I don't have to call the salvage yard and send them back. That would make me unhappy. :cry:

Are they cracks or just flat spots? Cracks might not be a good thing, but flat spots wont hurt. Hitting the hub on the side makes the cone washers pop right out.

Yeah, they are hairline cracks. One hub is a little worse than the other. Everything is still intact and seems to still be pretty sturdy. It's on the outside thin spot. I really don't want to send them back but I will if I have to.

I guess I could put them on and see if it breaks. Then just send them back if it does. But then there's all that work I did for nothing. I'll look at them again tomorrow and see if I can come up with a decision. At least the hubs are warrantied for 60 days.

I really wish I had a camera right now.

Send them back. Those flattened areas are due to being improperly removed by some meathead. I took mine off easily using a weighted wooden mallet and striking the hub on the face next to the studs. Never use steel on steel...use brass, copper, wood (a nice piece of maple or oak), rubber, etc. Tap around the face and those cone washers will loosen right up. As they loosen up, extract them so they can't tighten up on you again.

Well I just called the salvage yard that I bought them from. He said for me to just put them on and see if they break. They are warrantied for 60 days. He said if they do break that he would just send me some replacements. I guess I'm just going to finish cleaning them up and put them on here in a few weekends when I replace my rotors.

I looked some more at the cracks. So far they seem to be mainly around the outside edge, the top, and bottom. I couldn't see any cracks on the inside where the conewasher goes. I'm thinking these are just surface cracks from the metal bending when it was hit by the hammer.

I also think that this is a something that some people have missed because the cracks are very small and not noticable.

Time will tell.
