I have around 265,000 miles on the original timing belt and water pump. Now, I had 265k miles on the radiator and thermostat, though the radiator popped mid-trail this past weekend, so they've been replaced (thermostat for caution). Amazing both were OEM parts (bought the truck used).
With the fan/shroud/radiator removed, I took a peek at the TB - yeah, it needs replacement. Full of spider cracks, very dry, but isn't frayed. When the change happens, I will time myself, along with replace water pump, cam seals, crank seal, and tensioner. Expect a write-up in the next 2 months.
Looking forward to that write-up I have 150k miles on my original belt right now.....I'm thinking, if it holds up, that I'd like to change it out at 250k miles. Kinda risky waiting that long but I'd like to replace the oem belts and the oem radiator at the same time. ....3 birds, 1 stone. I am pretty amazed at these 3.4 engines. Maybe ole ZUK here will do a write-up on it also.....you know me, no shortage of pictures when I have a digital camera and a charged battery

I just did the TB and everything on my 3.4 swapped into my 92. I bought everything from an ad on Ebay and it was all top quality stuff. Everything was Toyota or Aisin. 355.28 shipped

Dont forget to replace the crank bolt!! Not advised to reuse the old one.

I turned over 300,800 miles this summer oh yea. 171,800 miles on the belt, original idlers, tensioner, water pump, seals, thermostat. That all changes Tuesday tho doing the front end of the motor then. The origanal starter bit the dust 8-24-12 RIP.
Mine was done at 88 by the previous owner and now at 195 my water pump is making the squeak of pending death so I will replace it only because of the water pump. I am sure that most of the reason to replace the belt is because of the idlers and water pump.
I just changed mine with 203k on it. I did 1 at 98k b4 i knew how good this engine is. I decided it was time now cause my original water pump was going out only took 12 years and 301k miles. Lol
I've got 205,000 on my 99 runner and have yet to do the timing belt or pump.
The belt has hairline cracks but i'm not planning on doing it until next winter.
Dealing with a worn front end, tires, bags,shocks struts etc right now.
Offroading takes its toll.
I am kind of scared and I have actively looking up videos on how to replace it. I found a few and it doesnt look too bad. Ill' have to order parts asap.

It's because you have to remove the timing belt to reach the water pump on the 3.4L 5vz-fe. Why change the belt only and then have the water pump or another component fail and have to re-do the timing belt job?

I just blew thru 200,000 miles and still on the original timing belt. Bought the 01 Taco in 06 from an older guy that never did this kind of maintenance.....so I know it's original. Heck, even the 3 engine belts are still original but I must admit that they must be changed soon....there are cracks in the cracks of the engine belts. They no longer are black....they are brown.
Good idea to use all OEM parts. I paid a local shop to do the belt service on my '04 TRD Taco at 97K, due to a slow, crusty waterpump leak. I requested OEM parts and old parts returned for examination, but when I picked up the truck my old parts were in a box for a aftermarket kit. Sold the truck soon after, and the T-stat failed on the new owner, who lived out of state. If he had been local, I'd have had to go to bat to have the shop cover it. Belt looked great. BTW, I'm on my 3rd Toyota 4x4 pickup since 1993. About every 11-12 years I get the itch to buy a new one, whether I need one or not.
Going back through this thread makes me feel better. Mine was last done at 120,000. I have almost 210,000 right now. So while it's definitely on my list, I won't stress about it, and just get to it when I have the time and money.
Been 2 yrs after changing my timing belt, at 182,500 then. Feels good not worrying about it for a very long time, but relieved to know it's a non-interference engine. Water pump had been shot too, and I'd changed all the v-belts. I didn't do crank and cam seals (no leaks..yet) and I re-used all pulleys. Every time I look at the coolant reservoir and see the proper level in there, I feel great knowing the t-belt//wp maintenance was accomplished. I always wondered back then how come the reservoir had been empty.
After that fun time, I accepted the fact that a lot of work on autos is usually taking part after part after part, after yet another part, and oh one more part, just to, oh sorry, this part too, just to get to the actual part.
