85 PICKUP

I posted this on a different 4runner forum and I wanted to get some opinions over here.

2 months ago I purchased a 99' SR5 4runner V6 auto with 164k. It was from a Toyota dealer and seems to be in good shape. Its a 1 owner, however I do not have any maint records aside from a timing belt replacement sticker and a few misc items (new starter, front brakes and rotors, pwr antenna)

Since I bought it I went through and got the maint up to date:

Changed fluids in axles, t-case, tranny, and radiator
Changed out plugs, wires, pcv valve, and fuel filter
Removed and cleaned T-body and ICV valve
Radiator bypass with Hayden 677
Swapped tires from my Frontier I traded in to 265/75 Duratrac's.

Also did some misc stuff like removed running boards, added front mud gaurds, new CD, replaced most dash bulbs, and added Tundra 16" TRD wheels.

Its a local Oregon truch so there is no rust issues. Doesnt appear to have ever had any paint work and has no dents or dings. I've crawled under it and doesnt appear to have any oil leaks. It also has the saught after rear diff locker.

I was thinking of doing the OME suspension lift with shocks and coils but am concerned with the miles and dumping money into it. I would also love to do an ARB front bumper. I do however own the runner free and clear.

Sorry for the story, but what are some opinions. Here is a pic of how it currently sits

I'm still working on my '99. And I plan on for several more years. If it's solid then I don't think there is a limit on miles. When \ if something brakes or needs replaced that's when you upgrade it. I just got back from camping today. I was riding on my bumpstops so I know I have to get a suspension. So I plan on getting a lift to get me 2.5 to 3.5 inches higher.

mine had more miles than that when i put on the lift ...also if you need to change out the water pump or t belt ive got all the tools to do so

generally as you gain miles parts begin to fail and you upgrade them to offroad parts, so honestly, the more the better.

99+ 4runners are very nicely equipped...and providing it was maintained/cared for, no amount of miles should be a concern for modding.
If or when a major component fails like an engine/tranny, it's normally worth replacing or repairing.

164k?? thats too much dude.. i'm surprised it hasnt had all 4 tires fall off and the whole truck implode... you should give it to me and write it off as a safety upgrade..

I really do not know. It is a one owner which is nice and you would assume that if the interior/exterior of a vehicle is in nice condition maybe that pride in ownership carried over to the maint. I can only hope.

But with no records its kind of a crap shoot really.

After two months, if it's running well and you haven't noticed any leaks, I would definitely consider doing your mods. I have 300k+ miles on mine and it's doing great. I have kept up the maintenance and it'll go for at least another 100k+ miles, I'm sure.

I may get some arguments about it, but I have a few recommendations for you for longevity. This has worked well for me and mine:
- Buy the K&N Air Filter. It will save you money in the long run and gave me slightly better gas mileage and power.
- Do the Deckplate Mod. This helped with airflow, gave the truck a better sound, and added a slight amount of mileage.
- Buy the K&N Gold oil filters and use Valvoline MaxLife oil.
- Check into the lift kits from Sonoran Steel. I bought mine from him a little over three years ago and it was a very easy install. They come with everything you'll need to upgrade and make for a perfect ride. Overall, it's a little pricey, but well worth it. If you want to do any off-roading or towing, the System 1.2 is the best. It will sit a bit higher in the back. They also have different options for city driving that sits level. Steve has been great to work with over the years, too.

164K? That thing is just getting broken in. Keep in mind that if you lift in your CV boots will probably leak cv fluid, but you can fix that by getting some new clamps. Also check you ball joints. Mine started leaking after I lifted it with 186K on it.

Drive it stock for a few months and replace any worn suspension parts when you lift it. Portland area 4Runners have usually lived pretty easy lives. Ive had two used 3rd gens from the Portland area and modified both of them. If you care for it, you can easily get 300,000 out of a 4Runner.

Well, its not exactly from Portland but Springfield, OR which is near Eugene.

Same difference I imagine plus it was a one owner who traded it in on a new 10' 4runner so apparantely they like 4runner's...

Its funny as I swore I would never buy anything with this many miles, but being on some of these forums 200k isnt uncommon. When I bought it I figured if it gets me another 3 years / 30k I will be happy.

We'll see on the mods. I would love to come across some good condition used items, but they seem few and far between.
