I think this is a good reason:

It's actually pretty easy to swap out an airbag equiped steering wheel. Disconect the battery terminals. there are two little screws on the side of the steering wheel. These are the star shaped scews so you need that tool for those. Then pull the plastic off the wheel. Then there is a air bag unit there. Disconnect the unit (it's a wireing harness, so just unplug it). remove the airbag. Under it is four bolts, remove those. install new steering wheel. leave the airbag off.

Amen SDASTG1! excellent posting .......
dont understand why every one makes a big deal out of removing an air bag .. when all you have to do is disconnect the battery and undo bag screws and remove the bag ...... and yes i know some of you will say "what if he crashes and there is no air bag to protect "...well if he wants to remove it then he is willing to take that chance isnt he .

He should not do this because this vehicle belongs to his parents, among other reasons.

Having the SRS light on constantly would really bug me, but I guess you could take apart the dash and remove the bulb...

My wife in an insurance agent and she recently had a client with some sort of mid-90s sports car that put in an aftermarket steering wheel and removed the air bag. Of course the kid didn't mention to the insurance company that he had removed the air bag. Apparently he rear-ended someone in town doing like 25-30mph and had a bunch of facial injuries and some broken bones. He was denied partial medical payment by the insurance company for tampering with the air bag system. Let that be a lesson to some people.

Of course, the term "fast" is used loosely

extremely so. In fact the 44Runner might be able to smoke an MR2 Spyder. SC, 5 spd, 4.88s and 35s. It would be a close race, lol
