How does your 03/04 4Runner shift?
Greetings:
After driving my new 04 4Runner Sport Ed for 350miles, I notice that when shifting from park to Rev or D, the SUV jolt/shake abruptly (not as smooth and barely noticeable as the first 300 miles. Now, it feels like the SUV has a hikup). Is this normal? How is your transmission behavior when shifting from P to R or D?

Have not had any issues here at all. Keep in mind that you are still breaking in every component so there will be some time for adjustments etc etc.
But if you're experiencing extreme jerking that might be of some concern. Are you completely stopped before changing gears? Sometimes people forget to stop completely before moving from R to D and vice versa so. If you don't stop completely, you will experience those conditions of the jolt/shake.

Do you have the V8 or 6? When cold, and backing out of the driveway, my tranny takes a few seconds to 'get the slack' out of the full-time four wheel drive when I shift to 'D'. My wifes '03 Subaru AWD does the same thing, so I figured it normal for a AWD vehicle to have some slack in the drivetrain when cold. It is kind of a small jerk when shifting, but I attribute that to a high idle at startup.
Like I have learned on other Toyota issues, unless the vehicle is visually and physically broken the Toyota dealer will stamp, 'could not duplicate' on your repair order.

I have noticed the same thing and i have almost 15k miles on it, from Reverse to Drive there is a pause before it kicks in...i guess its a normal thing since its happening to a few of us

Just a thought, but it might be the problem a lot of '03s are having with poor or no lubrication in the rear driveshaft slip joint. There have been numerous complaints of bumps when starting off after a sudden braking stop. I know mine did it for a while until I learned about the slip joint issue. After loading it up with grease, bumps went away. Might want to have the dealer check it out, get it on record just in case.

How can I put this...nah I won't. Revs up to bout 5-5500 when pegged, and shifts very solid and smooth...no complaints here at all. Was only revving up to bout 4000 before I added the FIPK and Magnaflow...made a big difference...much more aggressive now. Oh yeah, she's a V-8 for reference. Peace.
