How do I disable...?

How do I disable the "automatic door lock feature when I put it in gear" feature on my 1997 limited? I can't stand it! It is so annoying, especially when I go to get out of the vehicle and it was supposed to unlock, but for some reason, it chose not to. Anyone know?

That sounds like an alarm function. Get a copy of the alarm programming guide to figure out how to disable it.

I actually have an aftermarket alarm, so I don't think it's related to the alarm, but maybe it still could be. My other 4runner isn't an aftermarket alarm and it does it too, so I don't know. Any other ideas?

My Runner has a DEI 550ESP - which locks the doors. My JGC has just the factory keyless entry and it also locks the doors. The difference is, the Runner doors lock right after startgin it, the JGC doors lock when I hit 15mph.

It is most likely a feature in your aftermarket alarm. I had a 97 4runner, it came with the factory rs3000 alarm, it did not do autolock AFAIK. I then added an aftermarket alarm that has autolock feature, but it also unlock as soon as I shut off the engine.

My Viper alarm did that when first installed. I didn't like that feature so I had the system reprogrammed to disable it.

like everyone else said it is probably the aftermarked alarm.. My dad's tundra does the same thing since he put in a aftermarket alarm (he just wanted the remote start ) the auto locking of the doors from an OE computer or alarm is really only found in Domestics

So, since I bought this thing used, how's the best way to find out what type of alarm I have, and then try to reprogram it to take the auto lock feature off?

Look on the remote or control box for a brand name and model number. Once you find that out I'm sure you could either look for the companies website or call them to find out the programming for the system.
