I use Castrol GTX & fram oil filters.... same thing with my dad's Tacoma. Both have ran without problems and are extremely high mileage.
Like has already been said, changing your oil frequently is the biggest thing -- the brand of oil is a distant second in consideration.

Penzoil does not suck, GET AN EDUCATION.. its actually one of the if not THE best dino oils out today. it battles fuel dillution much better than GTX. nothing wrong with GTX but from UOA's that i have read Penzoil beats it hands down. the key is to change the damn oil like you are supposed to. go no longer than 5k on most oils and that includes most syns also (except maybe amsoil, redline, and some M1 motor oils).. if you drive lots of city and 4 wheel like crazy, or idle a lot then 3k mile OCI's are a must on most oils..
btw you cant really clean sludge out. you may get some but most will stay caked in there.. dont worry about it too, many many sludged motors driving around with 150k + miles on them

its also from poorly designed motors also..things to help omit sludging is simple
change the oil
change pcv regularly
use quality filters (not FRAM) lol

WEll I just called and talked to the Toyota dealership about sludge removal and he said by far that AFT fluid in the oil for 20-30 min (at idle) or so is the cheapest best way to clean sludge. He said that the amount of detergents in it is VERY high and won't hurt your motor unless you get crazy with it. (About half a bottle he said.)

to me a 1\2 a qt wont do much of anything unless its the 4 banger then maybe but i would research this before you go sticking non motor oil in your motor...

I just got my 98 4runner and I was a little worried about things being maintained, so I spent about an hour with it checkin it and stuff.
Put about half a bottle of seafoam in the gas tank, cleaned the throttle body (holy hell it was dirty) seafoamed the PCV valve, and I'm gonna clean my MAF (not that that has anything to do with maintenance) and add some seafoam to the crankcase about 500 miles before oil changing time.
I don't know if it needs it, but it'll definitely ease my mind.

i would call 6 more stealerships to confirm that theory.. i know its old school way of cleaning a motor up but if you change the oil like you are supposed to then you shouldnt need it to begin with. its that simple.

There was another post about puting water in the carb. That only helps with carbon build up in the chambers and valves.

bump thread
bumping this thread for updates and longer term results
also, i read that certain fluids, atf, seafoam, deisel, etc... in small amounts and let idle with a few blips. and that not to aggressively attempt to desludge. but wouldn't a smaller amount of detergent/cleaning fluid become MORE concentrated potentially clogging passages?

I ran sythetic oil in my 3.4 for 40,000. The heads had a bit of sludge when i started. When I pulled covers 40k later to check valve lash, the looked close to brand new. A good synthetic will clean a motor out over time, last longer between changes and run the motor better. Keep in mind I had replaced all the seals on the motor before I swapped it in. No leaks.

Not to get caught up in a heated debate, amsoil makes a product to specifically clean sludge, I haven't used it personally. But I know a few who have with good luck. I like the fact that is was made to do the job. Just an idea........

MMO and Kreen from kano labs are some popular ones. Fortunately for me I've been running synthetic since 9K miles and to date with almost 150K she still looks purdy.

Try www.auto-rx.com.I used it on my wife 1992 Camry V-6.I used it according to the instructions and the car is running better.
This arx user had serious sludge and the results just may surprise you.
