Hood Float

Ok, Im wondering if its just me or this is a common problem. My 96runner has the factory hood scoop on and while on the highway at speeds greater than 65-70 especialy when windy I swear my hood is going to fly up on me, I watch it floating. I have adusted the adjusters but I think its the Scoop catching air, in fact I can hear it whistle(I guess you can call it that) at high speeds when real windy. Everything is tight, I do not have a bug deflector I dont think it would make a difference so my conclusion is the scoop.

I didn't know they made factory hood scoops for the 96 model. Anyway, I have a 98 Runner, had a 93 Runner and a 87 4X4. They all have or had the hood float problem. I always thought it was caused by the wind deflector they each had. - Mike

You live in Kawi??

I used to live in Puako... I miss it there.

I have the hood-floating problem too.

This fix has been around for quite a while but I don't hear many complain about it anymore:

Interesting read. I like that he doesnt reviel what it is, ill bet its a strip of metal or somthing that lies along the rail. My hood is off a newer model and Kawi is refering to the Kawasaki I used to have.

The "fix" Is for the rear edge. I've never noticed the rear edge. My hood does float on the front edge too.

I never heard of anyone installing it and I never looked into it because mine doesn't float/flutter at all, but the problem is usually traced back to a bug guard on the front of the hood (some with hood scoops have mentioned it as well).

I am sure it is quite a simple fix which is why it isn't shown.

You would think that if anything the bug deflector would help. Not to get off topic but I would like to get a rear wing on my rig but I think they are dealer only, you rarely see them on the 3rd gens.

I got OEM one from e-bay for $40.00. And it is worth it. Keeps my back window a lot cleaner.

I had the (front) hood floater problem but flushed it a couple months ago by screwing the rubber hood spacer thingies out a couple turns. Have to press the hood down with a little extra force to get it to lock and it's not 100% even... but at least I don't think its gonna kiss the windshield at 80mph now.
