higher wattage 80/100 plasma bulbs any issues running them?

I bought some street glow superwhite 80/100watt 9004 bulbs for my runner yesterday.
I installed them they look great at night and totally look cool with the hyperwhite bulbs in my clear corners. So anyways the guy warned me he said you may have issues of wiring harness burning up later and suggested I upgrade the lighting harness.
Has anyone yet had issues using the stock harness with higher wattage bulbs?
I know I ran the higher wattage APC's in a 95 pathfinder I had and had no issues whatsoever.

anybody? Could people be burning harnesses due to bad grounding issues?

on motorcycles and sleds i have heard of melting wires, but on a car? those aftermarket lights even in stock wattage are bright.

Try them. If no fuses blow you should be ok.
Those bulbs exceed stock wattage by almost 50% though.

First off, yes, I know of MANY people who have melted their harnesses. REalise that the factory sizes the wire exactly to the design load, the pennies they save by not oversizing adds up to millions of dollars each year. The extra amps you draw can indeed burn up the wires. And the light switch. Also, the hotter bulbs have a tendency to melt down the bulb holders, and/or the wires near the hot bulb holder. Second, they are illegal in all 50 states.... word of warning... DOT says 55/60. No more.

If I was going to add 50% wattage to my bulbs I would install relays and power the lights themselves from fuses at the battery and use the factory light wires to trip the relays. Neat things happen - you get full voltage at the lights (no drop due to running all the way to the switch and back etc) and you don't compromise the stock harness or switch. Adding relays will even make stock bulbs brighter.

Here's some pics I took tonight of these things.

lights off with just the clear corners and hyperwhite 194's in them

Street Glow xenon white lights on

This about as low as I could get the camera without the light blocking
out the rest of the truck when I took the picture.

I'll have to pull one out and put a stock bulb in so you can see the comparison over stock.

I might get some of these bulbs for my Hella 500's too.

I'm always interested in the "lumens" of a bulb rather that wattage. Many "off" brands boast this and that about wattage...

I have been running 80/100w bulbs in the stock harness for over a year with no problems what so ever...

I don't think that I evern had to upgrade the fuses which would mean that the wiring is still not the week link if something goes....

Even your fuse is no guarantee of safety, many years back I was running a 1981 Renault Fuego, after approx 6 to 8 months of using 80/100W bulbs the internals of the switch melted whilst on a night run. Had been running on high beam for about an hour when this occured, no fuses blew, no other wires melted, just the internals of the switch got fryed.

upgrading a fuse doenst mean the circuit is safe... all it means is that the wires are capable of handling more than that fuse...... if that is the case.... even upgrading the fuse...well, doenst mean anything

I'll likely get the upgraded wiring harness down the road. They only cost about $45.

You can just add a couple relays, and wire straight to the battery for much less.

I thought the main problem was the guage of wire to the lights and the connector melting wouldn't you have to run new wires to the connectors?

It sounds cool to save a buck and I have 2 hella 30 amp relays with wiring but I would rather not deal with the headache of rewiring the bulb connectors too.

Who makes an upgraded harness for 4Runners with 9004 bulbs? especially for 45 bucks?

The best I found was this site where they offer a relay kit for 55.00 but it isn't complete and you have to add the wire and solder it yourself.

"painless" wiring has a generic 9004 relay kit, which is complete but they wont sell to me directly even though I am local and the closest reseller quoted me $130 bucks for the kit

I have been running Silverstars for about a month now and love them, very nice difference. My only concern is how long they will last - many, but not all, have reported short life spans with these bulbs....we shall see how mine do.

This place sells the upgraded 9004 wiring connectors: http://store.racinglab.com/headbulwirha.html
I guess if you had the relays it would be about $20.
I know I did see a whole kit for $45 it was made by either hella or APC I can't remember which one though but I'll stop by the store I saw them at tomorrow.
Here's another dude selling wiring upgrade kit w/ relays for $35 plus $8 shipping:
http://jen.liu.tripod.com/suvlights/id14.html

This place specifically has the APC kit for toyota's for $49.95:
http://www.stylinconcepts.com/part.c...=29&lc=pfpartt
Also the H4 kit is the same price for new toyotas.
