Over Labor Day weekend, Indiana (mostly the central part of the state) got like 8" of rain in one day. That doesn't include what we got the day before. Anyhow, I forged at least a 12" puddle/ stream across the road. I just threw in in 4low and gave it hell. Everything seems to be ok. I need to re-grease the drive shafts, but is there anything else I should be concerned with? Nothing leaked oil before that and nothing does now, but should I be looking very closely now?

Yeah, at about 24" all you need to worry about is the rear breather/diff ingesting water.

12" is nothing. Wheel on.

When it starts coming in the door jams, that's a deep water crossing. Not fun to clean out my truck when that happened

yea and double that and it time for a snorkel -- this is my brothers (hyperlite) he got the snorkel after he hydrolocked his motor in a 4 ft puddle but made it thru so no mud in the interior -- hit it hard -- althought if he made the proper bow wave he probally wouldnt have hydrolocked -- that time anyway!!

Ok, I wasn't sure. I didn't think it would have been a problem, but this Yota's gotta last me awhile.

12inches, you should be fine. BUT, next time dont "give it hell". Plowing at highspeeds through any level of water is a BAAAAD idea. You will force water into your air intake and throw a rod($$$$$$$). So next time, but much more careful. If you think it was deep, check your air filter immediately and see if its wet or water is in you box. If so, pop a new filter in and dry that box out REAL good. If you stall out, DO NOT try to turn you truck back on. Pull out and clean out airbox.

There are quite a few threads on here about crossing streams creating the "bow" effect. Do a search for those...

What exactly is hydrolock....ive heard the term many times, never fully understood. Ive been in water up to my headlights about 3 times. pretty scary...

when water is pulled into the engine. Since water wont compress it locks the engine up. Can be pretty damaging thing.

If it does happen alot of the times you can pull the plugs and turn the motor over so the water will spray out the plug holes...

hydrolock is when you suck water in through your air intake and it ends up in one of your cylinders...then, the piston moves up the cylinder to try to compress the air/fuel mix as it normally does...however, it runs into a bunch of water which it cannot compress...because the water cannot be compressed, but the crankshaft is still forcing the piston up, something has to give...usually the connecting rod bends and then your engine needs to be rebuilt.

(EDIT: like CynicX said, sometimes you'll get lucky and the engine will just stall without bending or breaking anything...and then you can just pull the plugs and turn the engine to expel the water...so, if you are ever driving through deep water and your engine stalls...DO NOT TRY TO RESTART IT...pull the plugs and turn it over...you might be able to save it.)

btw, as to the original question...i like to grease my ball joints whenever i grease my driveshaft...might want to hit those, too.

the last tiem i crossed deep water, the engine acted like it was dying, but i turned the key and the starter buzzed, it was still running, but it acts like it doesnt want to move. crossing water has always scared and puzzled me. I got water in the tailpipe...and it all just burned off. Is there a major danger to getting water up the pipe?

theoretically, if you engine stalls or nearly stalls, it could suck water back into the engine via the exhaust...i'm not sure how likely that really is, but it could be.

anyway, i've always been taught to stay on the gas (not gunning it, but just constant RPM level at slow speed) when going through water to prevent this from happening.

been stuck in water that was deep enough to just barely cover my front seats in water... talk about a fun time explaining that one...
got highcentered on a rock in the river...
oh well it was on my ranch and i had to walk back to the house to get my friend with his landcruiser to pull me out...

everything was ok.....to the best of my knowledge. i proabably need to check a few more things tho. I try to avoid water thats gonna be more than proabably 2-2 1/2 feet deep. if its deeper than that...ill proabably get stuck anways.

About 10 years ago we had over 12 inches of rain one night, was a fluke. Took me 2 hours to go 20 miles because I had to take so many detours around flooding. Finally about 2 am I got on a highway heading south towards home...saw some police cars blocking the service road to the right ...turned my head back just in time to see the road under an overpass flooded right in front of me as I hit it about 50mph. It was about 14-20 inches deep and the wave came over the cab. LOL!!! Came to almost immediate stop...but the engine kept running...I slowly plowed through about 50 feet, came out of it and kept going. Did not find any damage to it. Scared the crap outta me.
