HELP Still can't pull Codes

Well the Saga once again continues, I have a 1996 limited 4x4 with about 92,000 miles.

After the engine check light came on, I took her in and the repair shop could not pull the codes. So under my extended warranty they replaced the ECU and gave me old one. And you know what? The CE came back on and they still can't pull the codes. Apparently they won't do any more work on the car until I pay with my own money, because it looks like the warranty company won't authorize any more money for that particular repair.


Anyhow, I am wondering if there is a way to extract codes directly from the ECU bypassing the OBDII port under the Dash.

I assume it just has some bad wirining. Can you get some sort of wire that will interface right at the ECU so I can bypass the original OBD II port???

codes

Greetings I have heard that some of the major parts stores will pull codes for you ie AutoZone, Pepboys.

The problem is that there is some sort of communication error between the OBDII port and the ECU. That's why I wanted to see if there was a way to directly connect to the ECU itself bypassing the wiring.

To the best of my knowledge there is no way to pull any codes besides going through the OBD connector.

Who was pulling the codes for you? Toyota dealer?
I have never heard of an OBD port going bad.

Did you go to another shop and have them try their reader too?

I have tried everything from Autozone to Toyota Dealer. In total I have tried about 4 code scanners....so there is something wrong between the OBD port and the ECU.

If you have swapped out the ECU already and have tried several OD readers, then I would bet money that it is a wiring harness problem. Someone will need to get out a wiring diagram, a multimeter and check continuity for the OBD connector all the way to the ECU connector. Make sure to check continuity from end to end and to ground for each one (makes sure you aren't grounded out and killing the data stream). The job sucks which is why I bet the warranty company stopped further payment.....it is a very time consuming job. Sorry about that.
