Help with 2001 T4R 4X4 operation question

I just bought an 01 T4R SR5, it will be a big change from my 1987 FJ60. I was curious if someone could walk me through the 2WD-4WD process as the manual is missing and the transfer case only has the high/N/low and a 4WD button. I also didn't see where the VSC can be turned on/off.

Thanks!

DS

First off welcome to yotatech!

Sounds like you bought the same rig I did.

1 2wd to 4wd is on the fly but I usually at 5mph or less with just pushing the 4wd button on the shifter.

2 4hi to 4Lo is from a full stop, drive shifter in N and then push 4x4 lever forward into 4lo and then back into Drive.

3 We have a center locking differential button just to the left of the steering column. It can only be used in 4Lo. THis will positively divide power 50/50 front to back and also will disable the VSC system. THere is no factory button to turn it off. There is however the "Andy Modification" He figured out how to interupt the VSC system by putting a switch in the ground wire which turns ot off in any drive mode. That is the simple explination of it. Really smart dude!

ive posted this before.. but its how i can best describe how to use it

the 4wd shifter in a 2001 works as such:

when youre in 2wd, the button is out, and the shifter is placed in H. When you want 4wd to be on, you push the button in. the lights will begin to blink. you must be in motion for it to actually engage. once you get to a decent roll, youll hear a "pop"/"clunk!" and the lights will stay on. this means 4wd H is on. to go into low, come to a stop, shift your auto tranny into N, then shift the 4wd shifter all the way forward. dont do this too quick or youll hear the crunch! to lock the ctr diff, hit the button to the left of the steering wheel.

the general rules are:
-dont shift into 4wd above 55mph or so, it will not engage
-if you want to turn it on while driving (say at 25 or 30 mph), it wont engage if you are accelerating (so let off the pedal while in motion and it should engage right away -- mine does)
- to disengage you must also be in motion.

Thanks

Thanks much for the posts. I have been a long time lurker and finally found the exact truck I was looking for 45 min. from my folks house in Michigan. It will be making the drive to DC next week.

My Dad is a retired guy with a wicked set of tools (mine are being shipped back from overseas) who is exited to hand me tools while I do the deckplate mod next week.

Are you guys running conventional or synthetic oil/lube? My truck only has 48K mi and I was thinking about making the switch.

Regards,
DS

I run synthetic just because it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.
