Hello and Help

Hi to everyone, signing in from the UK. Just purchased a '96 Hilux Surf SSR-G 3.0 Turbo intercooler and found your forum through the UK Hilux Surf site.

Ok, my first prob is this, and I have searched the posts for an answer and seen the results, I'd just like to know your opinions on the advice I got from the auto specialist.

Took the car to the auto specialist for a flashing o/d off light, but unfortunately they didn't have a diagnostic reader for it, apparently its hard to find anywhere that has one for an import in the uk.

Anyway, the guy has pressure tested the box and road tested, and he's told me its all as sweet as a nut, he's had it on ramps dropped down the speed sensors and tested them and they are also fine, and eveything is changing as it should be.

He's told me the box usually goes into fail safe mode (only third gear) if there's a major problem, but its all changing ok.

He shorted the diagnostic box to give the error code, but there isn't even an error code showing, which he says is weird, but would ensure there is no major problem which coincides with the box pressure being ok.

He's advised it can only be a very minor fault, such as, for example, the solenoids operating at say 60 degrees, when it should be 50 degrees, but enough to show a fault but not cause any problems.

He also did a stall test on it, which means nothing to me, but said it was fine.

He has advised to try and get it on a diagnostic for imports.

*******************************************

This light only comes on after 5 mins of driving, turn ignition off and then back on again and it goes out, then back on again after 5 mins???

Any advice/opinions from you guys would be great, but I can't pinpoint the problem at the moment, as there doesn't seem to be a fault code???

cheers

Welcome to Yoatech, sounds like your auto spec. was as thorough as he could be. I wish I could help you, but he is probably right, you might want to try a dealer. They should have the right diagnostic machine. Good luck.

I agree...I would take it to a dealer they almost SURELY have the right diagnostic machine to take care of it.

Let us know what happens!

thanks for the welcome

It seems as though its going to be hard to get a diagnostic check on an import in the UK, even Toyota dealers seem to give you a wide birth and any excuse not to touch it

Ok, this may be far-fetched but it's an idea. My girlfriend's mustang did that after she had the tranny flushed. She took it back and they realized that they hadn't put some kind of additive in it. As soon as they did, the light never flashed again. Could also have wrong kind of fluid in it. Just a thought.
Good luck

We were helping someone else on the forum out with their transmission but this thread might be very helpful to get info on diagnosing yours too. I would say the solenoids were to blame but you need to have some testing done to be sure. I am sure your situation in the UK is very similar to mine here in Canada.....1) the dealers don't know jack....and 2) they have no equipment with which to even diagnose anything. The US is top notch that way but us foreign guys suffer in the meantime! Anyway if you look at my signature you will see a device which connects to a Palm Pilot so you can do your own connecting to the computer (it will only work on all cars 1996 and after.....so 1995 guys you are SOL). I swear by mine and it should give you any codes if there are any (and will help many times in the future I am sure).

Here is the thread concerning trannys I was talking about:

that is one great piece of kit, I don't own a palm myself, but a good friend has one, and its new. i'll get to borrow it and look at purchasing the gizmo you've suggested. Thanks once again for the advice.

much appreciated
