Hello,

I am looking to purchase a 3rd generation 4Runner to build up as a family 4 wheeler. I have been looking at years 1999-2000 both Limited and SR5 Sports Edition.

My question is how can I tell which model or truck comes with 4.88 R&P. I plan on using 33's with stock 16's and about a 3" suspension lift with all the goody accessories.

Should I try to look for a 5 speed or stay with an automatic.

As far as the gear question, I would say look up the codes on google or something. As far as your tranny question is concerned, thats really a matter of preference. If you've got little kiddies and your gonna be driving them around alot in it, I would go with the automatic. Just less to have to deal with and many people prefer an auto on the trail.

No 3rd gen 4runner ever came with 4.88 gearing. Ever.

All Limited 4runners are autos, as are most SR5 4runners. They stopped making the V6 5sp 4runners in 2000 (last year for the option)

Well I can tell you that you're on the right track in wanting 4.88's with 33's. I just swapped my gears last weekend and its a huge improvement.

btw, mine is auto and I don't really miss my 5-speed too much.

i agree 110% plus its just more fun with a 5 speed. you said its just a family trail rig right. then go all the way!! and i also agree that no Toyota those years or ever that i recall has come stock with 4.88s all i can remember is 4.10, 3.73, and im not even sure but for some reason i think the older pickup extended cabs had 4.56s. thats all ive ever known about!

Thanks for the info on the R&P. In the event that I am able to locate a rig that has the factory rear locker, and I decide to change the gearing to 4.88, can I still retain the factory locker.

Also, how reliable is the ARB front locker. As far as lift goes, I am not too familiar with set up and brand. I am looking at 3" all suspension, I contacted Downey Offroad and they have some set up that would work. However, I don't want to limit my choices so please recommend other suspension makers for me to do research on. I plan on having a bullbar, winch, bumper and swing out spare tire carrier and roof rack.

I plan on getting the manual locking hub from Downey.

With the 3" lift, 275 tires on stock 16" rims, will there be any rubbing under full flex. Will spacer be needed.
