I have Pioneer DEH-8500MP and it reads MP3s from the regular CD, CD-R or CD-RW. In other words, it plays MP3s just as any other regular disk. DEH-8500MP doesn't have built-in hard drive (read: very expensive features which isn't worth it), but with .50c a CD, with about 200-300 songs per CD, and with a wallet of 20 CDs I have plenty to what to listen to while on those long trips.

The one I was looking at was from Kenwood. It's called the music keg and they carry a 10GB and a 20GB model. Bacsically you use one of their headunits, (possible others), and this device can be mounted anywhere in the cab within wiring distance. YOu bring the cartridge in your house upload your MP3s or WMAs, which I use, and then slap the cartridge back in the unit in your truck and rock out. No skipping CD players on the trails.

That indash Pioneer is cool though but more expensive than Kenwood's solution I believe.

I'm happy with alpines and love everything about it. why not just burn CDs? I no longer have to switch since you can put about 160 of good quality songs in 1CD. I bought Alpine just because I've always been satisfied with their product but if you really dont care about the brand, i'd go with cheaper units.
