Head Gasket Recall

I've been searching for a little bit on this subject and still haven't found an answer. I recently found out that the 1993 4Runner that i purchased has had the Head Gasket replaced under the recall, my question is do they just replace the HG's. I would assume so but I have seen posts where people have gotten new long blocks out of the deal. Is there a standard for which parts they replace or does it depend on whether or not the dealer wants to change certain parts. Confusing? Maybe.....
Anyways thats for responses everyone.

My HG was done Nov.2003 and they had the whole engine stripped down and machined, honed, and shaved or something like that. It all depends if the block is worth saving or not. At the time I didn,t even know that the HG was bad, it drove fine. I wish I knew then what I kmow now and I would of never took it in untill it blew-up. Then new LONG BLOCK . oh well

My experience with my '90 was that they only replaced the side that was bad. But while they had it opened up, I had the timing belt, pulleys and tensioner replaced along with the water pump. At the time, I was unaware of the recall and paid out-of-pocket. Toyota later reimbursed me for the HG work plus most of the other work I had done. I didn't complain about how they computed my reimbursement...

I assume it's up to the dealership to determine the extent of damage and what needs to be repaired so they can get reimbursed.

You would have to call your local toyota dealer and give them you VIN #. They can tell you whether or not your vehicle has had the recall performed or if you are still eligible or not.

I had one done a year ago...long block. Two weeks later I rolled the runner...total write off.
Bought a new (used) 91', made sure the campaign was still open! I call Toyota on a regular basis, to ensure that it's still good (it is). There is no end date on this campaign in Canada at this time.

However, you only get one shot at it, and they will not replace the HG bolts. So, some have great success, and others fail within 50K. The standard for replacing the block depends on the amount of warpage...any more than .0039" and it's toast, same if the block is cracked.

If you do a search for my posts re:HG recall you will see what I feel is pretty much definitive information on the curent status of the recall IE: specific years, what's covered, what I got, etc...

Seeing as you've already had it done, I'm pretty sure the Dealer is gonna give you the sad face and say " Nope". That said, there ARE a small number of 3.0's that they HAVE done twice...depends on how early the first campaign was done. If it was done very early in the campaign, you MAY get lucky. Seems the first one's done also used an inferior gasket.

I'm getting ready to have my current 3.0 taken in for the HG...not leaking yet. I think the best option (if you're elligible) is to wait until melt-down. Failing that (as some of them NEVER fail), drain the coolant, run it until you overheat and then drag it in.

I bought my 91, in August 2004... it's in for the recall as we speak. They just called, apparently timing belt is cracked, a/c belt and water pump are shot. Total bill so far $370+tax... i'm dreading their next call.

Green, make sure they are only charging you for the parts. All labor should be free. Thats the way they did mine.

well, they said that its an hour labour install for the water pump.. also, when i brought it in i just asked if they could take a look around in the engine bay, make sure its all good under there (based on the parts they are taking apart) and they quoted me an hours labour.. so i think at least $180 of the $370 is labour... sure this is supposed to be free??

It was my understanding that the service campaign ended late last year. Is it still on going?

When they did mine they told me if necessary they would strip it all the way down and fix whatever is wrong. It just depends on what is damaged...if the gasket has blown and the motor has blown as a result or something else has gone wrong as a result they will fix it. The recall is nothing but a good deal to look for being done in a used 1st gen Runner you're interested in.

Is the HG Recall ONLY on the 3.0 ? Or does it cover the 2.4L ?
