Has anyone replaced a fuel tank?
Hi guys,
I cannot fill my fuel tank up all the way without it leaking out of the flange between the filler neck and the tank. I replaced that gasket and tightened the screws up very tight. Unfortunately it still leaks. I think the tank has been knocked and deformed so there isn't a perfect seal anymore. (Previous owner).
I got a new tank and filler neck from the wreckers. My question is, is it easier to change a fuel tank from under the truck or to remove the bed first and work from the top?
Also any other tips/tricks?
Thanks guys, I appreciate your help and expertise!

I just swapped in a 16 gallon tank into my shortbed 82 that had a 12 gallon.
I took my bed off to fab in some supports but once the bed was off I could see getting the tank out from underneath is easy. 3 bolts up front and 3 bolts in the back unless you have a 4x4 then you need to take off the rock guard first.
Just make sure to disconnect the filler hose from the tank before you drop it. Oh and the electrical connection to the pump/sender.
Easy job. You could knock it out in an afternoon or less.

Thanks guys.
The FSM calls for a SST when disconnecting the fuel pipe from the fuel pump bracket. Its SST 09631-22020. Had a quick search and couldn't figure out what it is. Is it needed?
Guessing it is one of those flare nut wrenches that connects with a bolt on 3 points instead of just 2? which might strip the nut if a nut is small and on tight.
