I didn't realized there was a designated size - I thought you could just slop that stuff on

I just bought two. I can't seem to get the tips screwed all the way on the hose though.

Most grease fittings are equiped with a 'zerk' fitting. It looks like a small metal nipple. The size of the grease gun doesn't matter, what is needed is a female fitting on the end of the hose on the gun that will snap onto the zerk fitting. They are pretty much standard. Once it is in place, a few pumps on the gun will force the new grease into the joint. Just make sure you read the manual to see what type of grease is recommended for your application.

I have the standard grease gun it the female end that doesn't seem to work I put it on the zerk fitting and pump and grease goes everywere but into the fitting. Now this is a grease gun I took form work that we use on the equipment there eg. excavators, backhoe and the sort I'm just wondering if I have the wrong end on the gun

Coupla things - when you snap the female end onto the zerk, does it stay on? If so, try to hold the gun tip straight to the nipple, if it gets too off to one side sometimes it doesn't force the grease in and instead goes all over. Happens to me all the time. Second, it could well be that you have a stuck zerk. You can remove it and snap it into the gun and squirt some grease through it to check it.

Yeah, all mine were stuck on my taco when I went to do em the first time, I just used a pocket knife and cleaned up around the ball and then they took grease fine.

There is a small spring loaded ball in the end of the zerk fitting, and what happens quite often is the ball gets stuck in the opening (dirt or rust). Just get a small pointed tool, like an awl, and gently push on the ball to free it up. Once the ball moves, the grease gun should work OK.
