girl looking for opinion
One of my friends recommended me to this site when I told him the situation I have.
I currently own a 96 4runner and its been acting up the past few days. I was wondering if someone could give me their opinion on what may be wrong with it before I have to take it to the shop.
OK so when someone starts their car and puts it in drive and then take your foot off the break it usually starts to coast. Well my 4runner doesn't. Instead, when I put it into drive and take my foot off the break it just stays there. Then I give it a little bit of gas and it makes a THUD noise before it moves. It'll do this for five minutes or so until the car warms up, then the problem goes away. I'm thinking maybe the transmission is having problems engaging? And I know it has nothing to do with the fluid because I checked it and there's more than enough.
Anywho, opinions, comments, anything?

I'm certainly no expert, but it sounds like your rear brakes aren't releasing properly. I had a similiar thing happen once or twice but it went away and I haven't noticed it for quite awhile. Hopefully it's only a brake adjustment. Good luck!

Sounds like a bad torque converter. Maybe the fluid is all gummed up in there. And when you get it warmed up the fluid heats up and thins out a little bit allowing the torque converter to engage. That's my guess at least.

well the thud leads me to think the torque convertor or other binding in hte transmission... thud can also be a ujoint, but that wouldnt prevent the car from moving.... you might also want to have the rear brakes checked as suggested.. i know my rear brakes are currently not adjusted properly and they lock up on me when i brake hard with no load in the bed

The easiest thing to check would be the rear brakes if they are sticking(E-brake probably). While its still cold jack up the rear end to raise the wheels off the ground, release E-brake ...the rear wheels should spin freely. Apply the E-brake and check again. Release and check again.

Welcom to Yota Tech!! Have you checked your fluid??????? When was the last time you had your trans serviced?????????Does your Runner do this when shifted into reverse as well when cold????

I had the same problem with one side of my rear brakes. I had replaced a leaky axle seal a few months earlier and I think the gear oil ruined the brake shoes. I went ahead and replaced the shoes and springs and that fixed the problem.

Also try greasing the driveshaft to see if the noise goes away. Mine does not really start to coast either after letting off the brakes so I would not worry so much on that. I would have the tranny serviced as well and make sure to pull the pan and clean the tranny filter screen and refill with fresh fluid to the proper level.

Well Im only interested in pictures if theyre taken with her in the presence of her namesake (THERubberDucky). Ok, there I go contributing to the deterioration of the thread....sorry!
Although I havent had this exact problem in a four runner I have had this exact problem. I would look more towards the trans than the brakes Im afraid. Good luck!
