I am taking my Runner to the stealership to have the timing belt replaced. They are running a special right now of $219 for the whole job. Should I just have them replace all of the belts while they are at it? He mentioned that they would look at the water pump too. I am just curious what mileage you guys are getting out of a water pump. Is it something that lasts longer than 90K or should I consider it since they will already have easy access to it? Or should I just wait and do it myself when needed? Thoughts? Comments?

I say get the water pump,the part is relatively cheap, and you don't want to have to go back in there later just for that.

Whenever I get the timing belt changed, I change the water pump. The part is around $50-70 and labor isn't that much more. Its a lot cheaper to do it now.

Also I would get the drive belts replaced since all you are paying for is the parts.

Since I tend to go beyond the recommended mileage for timing belt replacement, I typically have the water pump replaced each time. It's cheap insurance since they're already in there and have everything torn down, despite my belief that the Toyota water pump would hold up until the next timing belt replacement. As far as the rest of the belts, I replace mine every other timing belt replacement unless any of them look too worn.

Where can I get the part for $50-70. I can not find it for under $95. I will get the drive belts replaced...I guess that is a no brainer

also have them check the oil seal on the oil pump, and the idler bearings.

If I'm not mistaken, the interval of changing the water pump is 120,000 miles and the belt is every 60,000miles. Since I screwed up and used my belt for 90,000 miles, I swapped it too. And the thermostat since thats like 6 bux.

When I went in to do my own timing belt for the first time, I discovered that both the upper idler and the tensioner idler's bearings were shot to hell and had been for some time. The previous stealership didnt say a thing about the shot bearings when it was in last....

10-4 I'll have them check that too. Toyota recommends that the Timing Belt be changed at 90K on the 5VZFE.

oh they must have changed it then btwn the 3vze and the 5vze then. What I listed was the severe duty change interval for the 3vze.

Be careful, they may try to sucker you into replacing all the camshaft seals and other miscellanea. I let them do that to me and it added about $800 to the bill; I doubt most of it really needed to be done.

I say go ahead and do the water pump, it's cheap insurance. $90 for a part that will last another 90,000 miles is not much on a per mile basis.

I had my timing belt replaced at the dealer on my 98 Tacoma at about 80k miles. They said my waterpump was leaking and the crank seal was seeping, so replaced those as well.
