Gearing with 33's?

Twards the end of this summer when m,y tires are worn out I plan to put on a 1"-2" body lift and 1.5" BJ spaces, and then 33's.

My stock R&P gearing is 4.10 and I would assume that even with my engine swap that 4.10 will not be low enoguh for 33's. So what should I go with?

I am hoping 4.56 will be ok since I can get those out of a wrecking yard for cheap and then upgrade my 4.10 diffs to 4.88.

What are your thoughts?
Thanks

4.10 will be a tad underpowered, but still acceptable.... 4.56s would be just about ideal..... 4.88 will be too low a gearset for everyday driving, acceptable though

Not alot of folks running the 3.4 in the 2nd Gen yet. You get to be the guinea pig with all this stuff. Since the 3.4 has extra power, I'd agree with the 4.56's. If you had the 3.0 still, then the 4.88's.

This applies for 5 speeds only though. Put an auto box on there and bump up (down?) a gear.

Hmmm, what gear ratio do most 3rd Gen owners run with glorified 33's and an auto?

I would get 4.88's. I really think that 4.10's are for stockers and 4.88's start the limit of being worthwhile for trail trucks driven on the road.

Talking 4.10 me thinks

I got the 3rd genner with 285s and you do lose some umph off the line, but a trail rig isn't supposed to be a race car. I still got plenty of power and just cruise nice and slow to make sure everyone can get a good, nice, long look!

I'm going to eventually regear when the rig is paid for, but for now it is just fine and dandy for a daily driver and a weekend trail rig.

I got 4.88's just because I wanted more torque offroad and for pulling things, assuming I have gription. it really helped out too onroad because with the 4.10's I basically had no top gear acceleration for passing on the interstate. 4.88's aren't too low in my opinion which comes from actually driving 4.10's and 4.88's with 33's.

I'm running 33's with an automatic that has overdrive. I put in 5.29s and I still can not use my overdrive. I wish I could go to a lower gearing. With a stick I would suggest Yukon 5.29 gears. Mine work great. You can buy them from Randy's ring and Pinion. Do a search on the name and you will find them. If you call them they can also help you pick the right gearing.

Tell them you saw their internet special. I got my front and rear gears with master install kits for $389.

lower than 5.29's?! wouldn't that be sort of over kill? I don't even think anything lower is available for our trucks.

I've heard of 5.71's, but I think they break pretty easy.

He has a 5 speed and 3.4L swap, those two things make a big difference. The 5th gear on the 5 speed is lower than the 4th (OD) gear on the auto. I would try the gears you have now and just see how much you want to change after that. 4.10 to 4.56 isn't that much of a change. I'm guessing 4.88's might be a sweet spot, but listen to the guys with a 3.4/5 speed/33's combo.

according to ZUK on 4x4wire, 5.71s aren't any weaker than 5.29s if properly installed. they have the same number of pinion teeth

He's not going to want 5.71's with a 5-speed and 3.4L engine unless it's just a trail rig.

Fever wanted something taller than 5.29's (Fever has 3.0/Auto), not 914Runner.

3rd Gen's do cost more - different gearset (either that or they saw you coming ) I think they charge more for 4.88's also - not sure what you got.

You've done a regear? Did you do the install yourself? How much labor would be charged to do an install?

Thanks

I find it hard to believe that you can't use your OD. I'm geared for 28" tires (4.10s) and I'm running 31s and I can use my OD. I've done some power mods too so maybe that's all you need. I would think 5.29s would be perfect for 33s since a stock 4runner with 31s came with 4.88s (auto) if I remember correctly.
