i'm not sure if there's a 3.58 final gear ratio. have you verified it?

anyway, the needed final gear ratio for 33" tires would depend on the kind of offroading you'll be doing. some are happy with a 4.10 final gear ratio. others have the 4.30, some have the 4.56, while others have the 4.88

4.56 or 4.88. That should leave you at 2500-3000 RPM at 70 MPH.

I doubt you have 3.58's.. I've never once heard of that gear ratio in this generation of 4Runners. You most likely have 4.10's. If you want to get closer to stock RPM's with 33's then 4.56's are good. If you plan on going any bigger than that though you might as well go to 4.88's. I have 4.88's with 35's and it's close to stock.

You might however want to find out your true ratio. If for some oddball reason you have 4.30's and you go to 4.56's you're going to be wasting money cus you and your 4runner wont be able to tell a difference.

One of the reasons im looking at regearing other then larger tires is was at off road park and didnt know that the breather tube fell off my rear diff and it sucked in water and gunk so i fixed the hose and drained and filled the rear dif and about a week ago noticd a clunking noise and checked it turns out that it iis the reae diff going bad so im like oh well i want to regear it and lock it anyways so i have a better reason now

What is the gear code on the tag inside the driver door?
If it is B02x, then you actually do have 3.58 gears !!
That will also tell you the stock tire size that came from the factory.

you can also double check the results from the above post by using your VIN in here:
http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/q.html
then choose "Powertrain/Chassis" then "Rear Axle Housing and Differential"

This is the first site that i have found that says i have 3.90s front and rear every other site says i have 3.58s in both either way the rear dif is about dead and they both need locked so im going with 4.56s and locker in front but havent decided on locker or spool for rear

i would recommend to lock the rear first and then check if you need to lock the front. also consider using a trutrac up front and a rear locker.

the front diff is a 7.5" diff and isn't as strong as the 8" rear diff.

Is this 4runner a 2wd? Everything Ive read says that 3.58's only came in 2wd and
pre- runners. All 4wd trucks and runners had at the highest ratio a 4.11. and the lowest being 4.88.

If you are 2wd then stop talking about wheeling.

Go over to pirate and ask the same question and see what happens, this isn't the forum people don't like when they ask a gearing question and get hammered with flames..........
