gear ratio code question

hey all! Using Steve's site info:

http://fastq.com/~sschaefer/Toyota_axle_codes.html

vzn185L-GKPGKA - my code points me to 4.100 with my 16"s w tha 265/70/r16's

so, what the heck is the 4.300 option?
and how do i achieve 4.300!?>!?

and....would 4.300 be nice ratio w/ 33's? or am I assbackwerds?

thanks!

Aaron

I switched to 4.30 from 4.10 and I definitely noticed the difference. But I only have 265/75/16's (32's?)

Best way to test if you are unsure is to crawl under and count the revolutions of the shaft as someone spins the tire around.

The 4.30 option was just that, an option. I was lucky enough to find a donor rig for my e-locker swap that had the 4.30 gearing. Otherwise you are gonna have to crack into the 3rd member to change it, and if you do that, you might as well get 4.56's or 4.88's.

Thanks Christian....so, the only way I'll KNOW for sure if i have the 4.30 option is if i get under there and check...which, I'll be under there in the upcoming weeks to change my dif's, transfer and oil...so, I guess I'll give it a good look then. That would be 4.3 rotations? correct....or???

Yeah, that sounds right...white out works good to mark the tire and shaft. Have fun.

if you have an open diff, leave one tire on the ground and spin the other tire 2 revolutions to get the ratio, if your locked jack both up and spin them once

Aaron-

Jim helped me on this a while back; it is two revolutions:

Block the tires at one end of the vehicle to keep it from rolling, and then jack up a tire on the other end.
Place the transmission in neutral and release the parking brake.
Spin the tire exactly TWO full revolutions while at the same time counting exactly how many revolutions the driveshaft spins (marking the driveshaft and tires beforehand will make it easier to count revolutions).

The number of revolutions the driveshaft spins is your gear ratio.
If it spins just over 4 times, then the ratio is probably 4.10;
If it spins 4-1/3 = 4.30;
If it spins 4-1/2 = 4.56;
If it spins just under 5 = 4.88;
If it spins 5-1/3 = 5.29, etc.

If you have both trucks there you should easily be able to tell if they are both the same ratio or not.
