gas mileage and power with 285/75/16's (33's)
Hey Everyone,
I'm new to this post and I got my first toyota (2000 4runner) a few months ago!!
I'm wanting to lift it and put some 285/75/16's on it, but I'm a little worried about too much power loss and bad gas mileage, since it's a daily driven vehicle.
So... I've been wondering what kind of gas mileage everyone is getting on the 3rd gen 4runners, running 285's, and is there any noticable power loss after regearing?? Also, what engine, gear ratio and tranmission type (manual, auto) do you have and what is your driving style??

- somewhat "agressive" driving style with a lot of highway driving, but sometimes i remember to keep a light foot
Current Mileage: around 15mpg. I get roughly 250 miles per tank.
Power Loss: There sure was right after getting the 285s and still with the original gears (4.10s). The 4.88s made a big difference, bringing it close to stock. Much better acceleration, power is back, and the new gears definitely show off-road.
With my old tires (265/75/16) and gears, i'd get around 275 per tank, if i was careful i could get just over 300 miles.

I did notice power loss going from worn out 265/70/16 to new 265/75/16 tires. I haven't noticed much power loss at all going from 265/75/16 to 285/75/16. I still have the stock 4.10 gears and it's not that bad, although the deck plate mod and electric fans did give me some power back.
Are you doing any calculation to correct the odometer reading when you figure your mpg? I haven't kept track of my mpg since going to larger tires because I'm too lazy to correct the odometer reading in order to get an acurate number.

with my 3.0 with stock 4.56 gears and 33s I get about 16.5 city/20 highway mpg if I keep the speed under about 70 on the highway... I get crappy mileage in town because I am undergeared. The same thing is actually a benifit on the highway because I run at lower RPMs. If I keep off the skinny pedal I get better mileage with 33s then I did with my 31s.

oh...nope. my odometer/speedo is about 3% off. so the figures i gave are the numbers i get, not true numbers. is there a way to correct the odometer/speedometer?

The whole reason why I ask, is that I need new tires and I am trying to decide if I wanna go with 265/75/16's (32's) or lift the runner some more and go with 285/75/16's (33's). I've been pondering over this for a week and can't decide!!
I do about 90% street and 10% off road, what do you guys think???

Assuming that it's at the wheel, then you could correct your mileage be figuring the difference in the circumference of the tires. For example, if your truck came stock with 31" tires that gives a circumference of 97.34" (Pi x diameter). A 33" tire has a circumference of 103.62". Divide 103.62 by 97.34 and you get 1.06. This is your correction value. If you multiply your odometer reading by 1.06 you will get closer to your actual mileage. So if your odometer reads 250 miles on a tank, you really went closer to 265 miles (250 x 1.06 = 265).
good point. i knew my odometer was off, i just never really thought of it, or remembered it when thinking about milage. that's comforting to know my milage didn't go down that much

I recently switched to 285/75/16's from 265/75/16's. At first with stock 3.90 gears on an Auto with the 3.4 I lost a little bit of power, but it wasn't that bad. I could get about 260 miles to a tank, and I drivr fairly agressively. Since the re-gear to 4.88's, the power is back, and gas mileage is down to about 250 miles to a tank (according to somebody else odo). I still haven't figured out my odometer offset yet. My truck left the factory with 225/70/15's and the dealer or port installed 265/70/16's...So I'm fairly certain they would correct the odo/speedo.
If I had to do it all over again, I'd likely go bigger! Maybe 315/75/16's....
