Gas Milage Conundrum

Hey everyone,

I believe I must add another thread to this already thoroughly populated forum concerning gas milage.

I've consistently gotten ~14mpg ever since I bought the car in early January, with one freak incident of 16mpg. Today I filled up and got calculated 12.8mpg. I went on about a 2 mile wheeling/4wd excursion, but that shouldn't drop me 1.2mpg.

I plan on changing all the fluids (brake, transmission, T-case, the differentials, the fuel filter) and doing some stuff when I get to 100k.

I'm thinking maybe my o2 sensor is getting a bit tired?

My runner has 98,000 on it and I'd like to be getting better mileage than ~14, what do you think my issue could be?

Man my 3.0 with 230,xxx miles on 35's gets 14-16 all around but I would think about fuel filter , spark plugs and timing belt kit if I were you.

I need to look/check the timing belt to see if its worn at all. Would that effect if much? Gas mileage I mean.

Is it hard to get that cover off to get to the belt?

I drive about 80% street 20% highway and even though its freezing here I usually don't let it idle, I just shut it off.

I am aggravated...

Is that 22 city, 22 mixed, or 22 highway?

And, about what RPM do you take you tach to on starts?

I'm getting 13-14.8MPG CITY depending on how I drive

Pretty much everything effects gas mileage.

Spark plugs
Wires
Air filter
Fuel filter
ALL fluids
Tire size/ Air pressure
Lead foot
Bad sensor
...the list goes on.

Now, knowing this, what do you think you should replace first (I would go for practicality and low price first lol)

Im not trying to bash, but I sat down and thought about this...

Losing 1.5MPG is only losing 27 miles for an entire tank. I usually fill up once I need about 12 gallons. Thats 18 miles lost. It sounds like alot when you put it into the MPG perspective when in reality, 18 miles isnt going to make me go another day before refueling.

can look at it this way too Nate:
loss
18miles/week @ 15mpg @ $3/gallon = $188/year not spent on cool toys

-or-

200miles/week @ 16mpg @ $3/gallon = $1950/year
200miles/week @ 14mpg @ $3/gallon = $2229/year
=$280 lost/year over 2mpg loss

I'm running 265/75/r16's so their about 3/4" taller, so a bit bigger, but I did the calculations with that in mind. My ODO said I'd gone 178, and since the new tires are 1.034x bigger (tire site comparison thing) that means I went 184 miles, big difference I know. Will PSI still be the same on my new tires as what is listed on the door frame?

My air filter is clean, looks new.

When I accelerate I don't get past ~2300 and only get up there when I'm getting on the highway, and when I cruise, I try to let the O/D do its magic ~1900. Lead foot is probably not the issue...

I put the wrong plugs in, single electrode crapp-o autozone ones. I plan on replacing them with ones from the dealer soon. My wires seemed fine to me when I changed my plugs, so I hope those are fine.

I might move my fluid change up a a bit... I guess I'll need to figure out what tools I'll need. Any advice for the things I want to change? (brake, transmission, T-case, the differentials, the fuel filter) Should just follow the 4runners.org guides? Anything special?

Sorted thru the chaff and made the questions yellow. Cheers!

Ahh, erase that "j" word, I got a warning from Corey when I posted that world last, and it won't go away for a year! I really didn't mean anything by it Corey!

Yeah, I may just get a motorcycle and cruise around town if gas gets too unreasonable. I can pay for it now. I just don't like to heh.
