Fuel range update

I keep meticulous records of my mileage.

last 4 fills, my average MPG is 20.9. Last one, I filled up right at 300 miles, 14.9 gallons. That's with a 3" lift, 265/75 MTs, and a 5spd. Stock intake, old plugs, blah, blah...

I drove for about 20 miles with the "light" on. Got a bit nervous about the range, but now I think 300 miles is not a problem.

Has anyone carried spare fuel and ran their tank dry to see what the max mileage was?

I don't race my 4runner. 73mph on the highway with the cruise on. On ramps are slow. I try to shift at 2K rpm max, aside from 5th gear.

I got 345 out of tank hwy dbl cab 4x4.It held 17 gallons when I filled up.Thats as close as I have got without running out.I wouldnt do it often. The fuel is what cools the fuel pump.My truck is stock except for a borla turbo muffler. That was going 70 to 75mph.

I seem to always get around 300 from my tank of gas, that is running 70 on the freeway with cruise and a nice mix of stop and go drving as well. When I fill up it holds around 14.8-15.5 gallons of gas. I have only once gotten 16+ gallons into the tank. I drive about 60-80 miles on my gas light before I fill up.

It is of some value to know how much gas you have when the light comes on. And easy way to figure this out is to look up how much your tank holds. Then note how many gallons you put in on a day when your light has just come on as you do the fillup.

The light turn-on point will prove to be reliable. Once you know how many gallons you have in reserve when the light comes on, you can use your mileage calculation to tell you how many miles you have left when the reserve comes on. Subtract 10 or so for safety.

Based on my experience I suspect you will be surprised by the answer. Probably in the 40 mile range.

I'd dare say mine is closer to 60mi.

I'll hit the red, put another twenty miles on it and then can't even squeeze 16gal in the tank.

Yeah... wow. If nothing else, 2k is about the least efficient place for the 3.4L to run. Well, there's idling in your driveway, but that line below 2k is pretty boogy.

I hear that you're getting good mileage, but you're actually wasting fuel by shifting so early.

Personally, I was shocked to find out we have 18.5 gallon fuel tanks; my low fuel light comes on when I have consumed about 13.8 gallons, leaving 4.7 gallons in the tank. I suspect a lot of 4Runner owners are filling up at 260 miles and not considering they are only putting about 12.5 gallons in their 18.5 gallon tank.

Depends on the year... Mine's a 16, and I've put 15.5 in it before.

my best guess is ~2gal left when my light comes on, gone 37 mi with it on
then filled w/18.3 gal

usually wait until the light comes on, ~340 mi = ~16.5gal

I have been able to put 16.25 - 16.5 in a number of times - of course I used to get the light at or near work and drive 52 miles home and then fill up (gas is usually cheaper in CT than NY).

ANywho - i know I dont have an 18 gal tank...

I thought the 3rd Gen's had an 18.5 gallon tank???

Are you sure your Fuel Level Sender is just not malfunctioning like many 3rd Gen owners have reported.

Well, I guess the correct/scientific answer is that I should run it until it's dry and see what happens, but... I ain't gonna.

Basically 'cause I've heard that bad thing can happen running a fuel pump dry. I've dropped the tank once already, I'm not looking to do it again.

My '96 Owner's manual states 18.5 gallons...I've put 16 1/2 gallons in it before. It's an SR5, maybe different from the limited? Yeah, I wouldn't run it dry, either.

hmmm... {searching}

I know this has come up before around here, and I've seen that 18.5 number before, but I thought there were qualifiers on it.

I'm searching around for the BIG old thread - I've found a couple of small ones, but there's a big one here somewhere.

I know that the Owners Manual on both of our's reports 18.5 and my ex had a 99 SR5 4x4 that reported the same.

Now, the 92 SR5 4x4 that the ex had seemed like it had a thimble for a gas tank. She would have to fill up 2 times for every one that I did in my Camry on a cross country trip back in 1997 and her mileage was not that out of wack.
